So, this is what jet lag feels like. We arrived back to our final North American destination last night at 8:00 pm local time, and after nearly 24 hrs of travel, I definitely had no trouble falling fast asleep once my head hit the pillow. This morning, not soo much. I am wide awake at 5:30, as my body is used to getting up and facing the day by now. Sigh… guess I should take advantage of it and hope that I am not falling asleep by dinner time πŸ˜‰

It is great to be back and to see the girls, as wonderful as it was to have two whole weeks alone with Ron, I really missed those little monkeys. We are easing our way out of vacation mode by hanging out in our old ‘hood in Ottawa. It feels great to be back and to see cherished friends. Nothing like getting the five star treatment by chauffeur Nina and staying at the beautiful Casa Genier πŸ˜‰

That being said, it was a wee bit disappointing not waking up to the sounds, sights and smells of the heavenly region of Lucignano d’ Asso and our incredible home away from home in Tuscany- Borgo Lucignanello.

Our trip to Tuscany was the perfect end to an incredible adventure. The slow, relaxed pace of our week in the magical Tuscan countryside was exactly what was needed after the faster pace of sightseeing in the larger cities of Prague and Rome. We kicked back, read books, challenged ourselves to bike ride through the hill landscape, caught up on sleep and conversation, while enjoying and taking in the culture of warm and friendly people that are proud of their history, food and wines. The easy going, good natured half italian/half english conversations with locals were one of the highlights of my trip. Ron was much braver than I in trying to speak Italian, many times being asked if he was actually Italian visiting his roots. I just smiled a lot and tried to make up for my lack of Italian words with politeness. It seemed to work =)

We enjoyed too many amazing meals to count. We also bought home made pasta from a woman in town and Ron cooked fabulous dinners made up of fresh ingredients. One of the local cheeses, Pecorino, is a mouth watering delight! The wine was also flowing… We visited a fabulous local vineyard, Poggio Antico in the Brunello region of Montalcino. Ron was simply beyond excited about the incredible wine cellar and tasting and I will not soon forget the lunch we had! There may be a case of wine waiting for us on our return home πŸ˜‰

Ron's happy place πŸ˜‰

Aside from hanging out pool side, Ron and I did manage to do a lot of exploring of the numerous medieval and renaissance towns in the region. With my navigational skills and Ron’s spectacular defensive driving we tackled the winding S curves, up hill climbs and crazy Italian drivers (road rules are merely a suggestion) in our incredibly powerful (insert sarcasm) Fiat Punto! We visited Montalcino, Montepulciano, Volterra, Siena, Pienza, Torrenieri and San Giovanni d’ Asso. The magnificent beauty of these towns are unlike anything I have ever seen before. We also indulged in a wee bit of shopping (LOVE the shoes) and of course, trying out the local cuisine and drink πŸ˜‰ An incredible adventure, indeed.

So, now we are back in North America. My first trip to Europe is over and as I take the time to let all all of the wonderful experiences sink in and share stories with friends about their summer time adventures, I realize how incredibly lucky I am. These memories will last a life time. I know that I will be back and next time when the girls are a little bit older I look forward to seeing a first time European trip through their eyes. For now, I am happy to have some time to see old friends but I am also looking forward to returning home, to the crazy city that I have come to love- NYC, I have missed you. Can’t wait to see that incredible skyline as the taxi races over the bridge… back to reality and the chaos of it all.

Forever and Always

On Saturday Ron and I arrived in the beautiful rolling hills of Tuscany. This is the third and final leg of our European Adventure. We have been taking full advantage of the relaxing lifestyle, breathtaking views and spectacular wine and food. Here are a few of my favorite pics so far! Enjoy and have a fantastic day πŸ™‚

On Tuesday afternoon we arrived back in Rome airport from Prague and immediately we were thrown back into the hustle and bustle of big city living. Except this city is slightly different in it’s architectural style than anything I have ever seen. It’s not often that you see a modern building standing beside one that has been around for approximately 2000 years or more!! Not going to lie, I was a little blown away. Although I much prefer seeing it from the relative safety of the sidewalk rather than the car ride from the airport as Rome appears to have no traffic laws and speed and lanes are a mere suggestion. A good back seat passenger, I am not πŸ˜‰

Thanks to a good friend we had an excellent hotel recommendation and we stayed at the Albergo del Senato. It is a very friendly hotel with a fabulous location. We had a 6th floor room that had a little balcony that over looked the Pantheon. There was no better way to get an immediate vibe of the city.

The view from our hotel room balcony- the Pantheon and the surrounding Piazza

Now, being from NYC you would think that we would be used to walking but I have to admit that Ron and I definitely put in the miles while exploring this magnificent city. We used this to justify all of the wine, gelato, pasta and the occasional emergency pizza that we consumed. FYI -The best gelato was recommended by Beccarama and IS at San Crispino (on the way to the Spanish Steps). I could write a post on the food alone. And don’t get me started on the shopping… we may have had to buy an extra bag to get everything back home! Every morning we stopped and had our cappuccinos and croissants at the local coffee bar, Tazza D’ Oro. I would end my love affair with Starbucks, if I could visit this establishment every day.

Chai Latte, I love you... but when in Rome...

We needed the caffeine because heading out to see the sights of ancient Rome is not for the faint of heart. It is hot and there are crowds but it is worth it to see the incredible structures and works of art. I am still in awe and wonderment when I think of the pieces of art on door frames, the statues in the courtyard of apartment buildings and tiny beyond beautiful churches tucked into alleyways, let alone awesome structures such as the Colosseum and the Forum. We visited the Colosseum and Palatine Hill on a very hot day but were very lucky to receive some valuable advice to avoid the hour and a half line up: if you pay 5 extra euros for the audio guide (which we loved) you can go through a separate line right on up to the audio line and buy your ticket/audio guide with little to no wait. Trust me, on a hot day, those 5 euros are worth every, uh, euro! I loved listening to the history of the planning and building of the Colosseum as well as the on-going re-construction. It does however freak me out a bit that it is said that when the Colosseum falls, the world will end. Lets hope it makes it through 2012 πŸ˜‰ The surrounding Palatine Hill where the remains of the ancient Roman palaces and grounds are, should not be missed, although be warned that it is quite a hilly walk especially in the heat. Keep refilling your water bottle at the many water fountains.

A View of the Colosseum

A definite highlight of our adventure in Rome was visiting St. Peter’s Basilica and then heading over to the Vatican for an evening tour, ending at the Sistine Chapel. I will have to write another blog later on after I return home about the powerful effect this visit had on me. Right now, only a day later, I am still trying to fully process all that I have seen. At St. Peter’s Basilica there was an extremely moving and powerful installation on the life of Pope John Paul II, this and the breathtaking Basilica is a memory that I will cherish forever. Our evening tour of the Vatican as the sun set over the city of Rome was also a once in a lifetime experience and one that I can’t quite find the words for right now.

I have to admit, I did fall in love with the beauty and romance that is the city of Rome. The energy,Β passion and pride of the people are evident in all of those that you talk to. There is soo much to see and do, I feel like we only scratched the surface. But, I know that I will be back because I stood with my back to the Trevi Fountain and threw a coin with my right hand over my left shoulder! Legend has it, if you do this, you will return to the incredible city of Rome =)

The Trevi Fountain

And now, I am sitting here writing this post from our third and final destination, a little villa in Tuscany. There is a glass of white wine by the computer, I am full of home made pasta, cheeses and bread. I think I may be slipping into a bit of a carb coma… I can hear nothing but the sound of my fingers on the keyboard… it is heavenly. The sun is setting over the rolling hills and I am melting into complete and utter relaxation. I have a feeling that this might be my most favorite destination of all or maybe it is just exactly the pace I have been looking for… Bouna Sera!

Do not disturb πŸ˜‰

P.S. To my new readers that have found me through FP, thank you soo much for all of your wonderful comments, I look forward to reading your blogs and getting back to your comments soon… maybe after vacation πŸ˜‰

Ron and I are off galavanting in Europe thoroughly enjoying our time together as a couple. It is almost like a second honeymoon. So, tomorrow as we celebrate 10 amazing years together, here are a couple of pics of us throughout the years. Feel free to laugh all you want πŸ˜‰

And to you Ron, I can’t imagine life without you. You mean everything to me- I love you- forever and always, always and forever.

It is hard to believe but we are almost finished the first part of our European adventure, visiting the incredibly beautiful city of Prague. We have had an absolutely fabulous time exploring this historical gem in the Czech Republic. Made even better by the fact that our main purpose to visit the city was to see our good friends Marta and Allen get married. Not a bad way to start off my first ever visit to Europe.

We started our adventure on Friday evening when we arrived after approximately 36 hours of travel. To say that we were a wee bit tired was something of an understatement. I had managed to get very little sleep on our trans- atlantic flight as I made the mistake of taking dramamine. While it makes the rest of the world sleepy and anti-nauseaus, apparently it makes me throw-up. Lets just say, lesson learned and I now know more than I ever wanted to about the toilets on a plane. The trip on the way home can only be an improvement πŸ˜‰

All this was soon forgotten when we arrived at our hotel in Prague. From the moment we walked into theΒ Aria HotelΒ Β we immediately fell in love with the beautiful decor and the extremely friendly and hospitable staff. Pavel greeted us, told us to leave our luggage as everything would be taken care of and offered us a guided tour of the hotel. He told us about the history of the hotel and showed us the extensive music library, the exquisite dining room, elegant common areas and best of all the garden of the hotel that lead to a breathtaking view of Lesser Town and Old Town. The tour ended with a complimentary drink in the lounge where Pavel offered sight seeing suggestions and answered any questions that we might have had. I really have no complaints about this hotel, our stay has been perfect. Our room is modern, comfortable and nicely appointed and the attention to every little detail by the hotel staff is beyond exceptional.

On Friday even though we were tired, we were beyond excited to actually be in Prague after all of the hours of travel, so we quickly showered and then headed out to explore the area surrounding the hotel. Within 10 minutes we bumped into our friends who were also in town for the wedding. At this point the festivities began and they have not stopped!

On Saturday both Ron and I awoke bright and early (damn jet lag) and took advantage of our new found energy to make our way to the Charles Bridge and into Old Town before heading back to the hotel to get ready for the wedding. The good news about being up early is that you avoid the crowds that clog the bridge later on in the day and we had a lovely stroll over the bridge with lots of opportunity for pics.

On Saturday afternoon it was Allen and Marta’s wedding. They were married on the grounds of the Prague Castle. To say that the setting was spectacular would be an understatement. It was breathtaking. The whole day was wonderful. The couple was stunning, the ceremony was moving in both English and Czech and the dinner and dance were lots of fun. It was hard to believe that we were watching our dear friends get married, that we were surrounded by other cherished friends and that we were all together in Prague on the castle grounds!! Did I mention that while the couple were getting pictures taken the guests were taken on a once in a lifetime private tour of the castle not open to the public. Yes, I am still a bit in awe about it. We capped off the evening with a very long walk back to the hotel (we may have taken a few wrong turns) which would have been a lot easier if I wasn’t in heels. Kel- I did not sacrifice fashion for practicality, you would have been sooo proud πŸ˜‰

Marta and Allen- Congratulations!!

Heels and Cobblestone, NOT a good mix!

The last couple of days have been spent wandering around the city itself, we have enjoyed good food, the company of friends and the adventure of being able to explore an incredible city. There have been many unforgettable moments and I am really excited to continue our fun when we land in Rome tomorrow. Right now, I guess I should be practical and start packing my bags and getting organized. I leave you with some of my favorite pics from the city. It is hard to choose, as there have been soo many picturesque opportunities. Happy summer my friends!!

YES!

Well, right now the suitcases are mostly packed, just about everything is crossed off the “to do” list and the kids are bouncing around the apartment with excitement. And I, I am beyond excited too! The girls are going to Ottawa for two weeks while Ron and I embark on our own adventure to Europe. This is my first trip to Europe and I can barely contain my excitement and did I mention we are going without children???!!! Yes, I will definitely miss them but I am also looking forward to some quality time with the Mr. This past year has been insanely busy and crazy to say the least and as you know there have been a few minor adjustments to our life πŸ˜‰ I can’t wait to just slow down and re-connect. So my friends, we are outta here… I will update from Prague, Rome and Tuscany as often as I can, there will be many stories to tell and pictures to share. And of course while we are gone our one year anniversary of living in NYC will pass, so in honor of that and Wordless Wednesday, here are a few of my very favorite pics that I have taken in the past year. Ciao!

Home Sweet Home

I have to admit that I am a bit bogged down right now in the middle of laundry, apartment cleaning, packing and just plain stressing for our upcoming trip. So, for this last Monday in June I thought I would share 10 of my favorite pics from our first year in NYC that fall into the category of strange and wonderful. New York City truly is a city where the unexpected happens daily. You never know what you are going to see when you walk out your door. This is one of the reasons I absolutely LOVE living here. After all, my motto IS “It’s always an adventure” so I tend to embrace each day with the thought that absolutely anything could happen and usually does. There is rarely a dull moment walking down the street so if you keep your eyes open and your attitude positive you just never know who or what you may see!

Enjoy the day πŸ˜‰

In keeping with my top ten list theme, I thought I would end the week by sharing some of my favorite places in the city that I love to explore, hang out at or just can’t get enough of. I know that the list is always expanding as I find new and wonderful spots in the incredible city of Manhattan but here are some of the places I have really come to love as part of my new home.

1. Central Park– I mean really, what is not to love? I have lived here for almost a year and I have not even come close to exploring all of the wonders that the park has to offer. As you wander into the beauty that is the park, you are instantly forced to slow down, breathe deeper and just let the serenity of the nature surrounding you relax and calm you. I love wandering through the ramble, looking for turtles at Turtle Pond, admiring the skyline of the surrounding city that peeks over the trees, sitting by one of the many bodies of water daydreaming or simply relaxing on a park bench watching the people stroll by. On a beautiful Manhattan evening there really is nothing more magical than a hand in hand wander through the park.

2. Chelsea and the Meatpacking District- This is one of my favorite areas of the city to explore. I love all the various architecture in the buildings, the amazing restaurants, the hip nightlife, eclectic shopping and the vibe in this part of town. There is soo much to see and do and it seems like this neighborhood is always evolving. It also includes two of my other favorite spots: The Chelsea Market and The Highline.

Street View- Chelsea

3. Chelsea Market– Chelsea Market is a fabulous indoor market that includes too many mouth watering restaurants and stores to mention. This is a family favorite to go to on the weekend where we treat ourselves to various yummy delights such as homemade bread, cookies, brownies, chocolate milk, cupcakes, crepes, fresh pasta, etc. (not all at once!!) There are also specialty non-food shops and the occasional sample sale πŸ˜‰ It is a great way to start or end your Highline (see below) walk.

Eleni's Cookies, one of our faves at the Market

4. The Highline– The Highline is truly a wonderful gift to NYC. They have taken the old railway tracks and made a beautiful garden/outdoor/walking space. You can walk for blocks elevated above street level with fabulous views of Chelsea, Meatpacking District, The Piers, Hudson River and of course, the many amazing buildings surrounding the area including glimpses of the mighty Empire State Building. A must see!!

The gorgeous Highline walkway

5.Brooklyn Bridge And The South Street Seaport– There is truly something awe-inspiring about the Brooklyn Bridge. Walking across it or simply standing under it and looking up is mesmerizing. And the view from the middle of the bridge, is worth the huffing and puffing to get there πŸ˜‰ If you make it across the bridge- DUMBO is a very cool spot to hang out. Β I also love the area right beside the bridge on the Manhattan side, the South Street Seaport. It is a fun place to visit in the summer where you can watch passing boats, have a drink on a patio or simply watch the kids play in the funky Imagination Playground.

Clouds over the Brooklyn Bridge

6. The Rockefeller Center and Surrounding Area– Yes, I know that this is an incredibly touristy area but it is one that I don’t mind fighting the crowds in. I really enjoy all of the different seasons at Rock Center. It is especially magical at Christmas with the tree and the outdoor skating but I also enjoy it in the summer months with its large outdoor patio. The girls love the stores in the neighborhood including American Girl, Lego World and FAO Schwarz. The walk down 5th Ave. during the holidays is incredibly spectacular. My goal is to enjoy tea at The Plaza this year!!

Rockefeller Center and the Tree

7. Riverside Park– This is a bit of a lesser known park than the ever popular Central Park but that is part of its allure. More of a neighborhood park than a tourist site, it is one of my favorite spots to walk the dog, go for a bike ride, pound out a run, have a picnic, talk to the water, play with the girls in the park or simply hang out on a bench and read my book in a shady quiet spot. The views are pretty spectacular too!

The Girls on one of the piers in Riverside Park

8. The American Museum of Natural History– There are tons of museums in the city and I have to say that I really do love them all but if I had to choose one right now that is my favorite it would be the AMNH. I love the building that it is housed in, the diversity of the exhibits and the proximity to my apartment. If it is a rainy day or an extremely hot day or just a day when we are all a wee bit bored we can head on over to the AMNH. Even if we go for only an hour, I always learn something new.

A large Dino hanging out at the AMNH

9.St. John of the Divine Church– There are also many beautiful churches in the city, but I have to say that St. John of the Divine Cathedral is truly one not to be missed. It sits on an incredible piece of property near Columbia University and is a majestic building with a deep history. It is a calming area of escape from the hustle and bustle of the streets. Also Morningside Park behind the church offers a stunning view into Harlem.

St. John of the Divine

10. Home Sweet Home (My Nabe)– It is hard to believe that we have been here almost a year. And yes, although there have been many adjustments moving from the ‘burbs to the big city, I guess I just feel lucky to have such an incredible opportunity to really get out and explore NYC and the surrounding area. I love where we are living. I know my neighborhood shopkeepers, the local doormen, the people I see on my dogwalks, the fruit guy, my fresh direct delivery man etc. I have favorite restaurants, food shops, clothing stores, delivery options etc. It feels comfortable, happy, safe… it feels like home =)

Have a fabulous weekend everyone!!

As seen from my apartment window. Luv you too!

Alright, as I was sitting under a shady tree in the park this past weekend, it occurred to me that we were going to be in for another hot and humid NYC summer. We moved here almost a year ago right in the middle of a smokin’ hot, pavement burning, unrelenting heat wave. I was a newbie to the city then and struggled daily to keep my cool. Here is what I have learned about survival in New York City in the summer. My top ten list:

1. Escape– If you do not have an endless travel budget like myself, then find yourself some friends who have weekend retreats (preferably near the water) outside of Manhattan. Be extra nice to these friends and hopefully you will get yourself an invite. When you do get invited make sure you keep getting invited back by supplying your host with lots of wine/champagne upon your arrival. Worry not, if you do not have any friends with weekend retreats there are a ton of beautiful beaches that are only a train/bus ride away. Plan little day trips that will allow a bit of a reprieve from the never ending over-heated sidewalks and attitudes.

Head to the Beach!

2. Go Shopping– Once place you can be guaranteed to find wonderfully crisp and cold air conditioning are in many of the shops lining the streets. In my opinion, the higher end the store, the colder the air conditioning (and usually the salespeople ;)). So, leave your wallet at home, head to Fifth Avenue and browse in and out of the lovely refreshing stores. My suggestion is Tiffany’s- extremely sparkly, there are five floors and the restrooms are beautiful.

3. Hang out at parks with water– If you don’t have children this can be a bit challenging and down right weird but if you do have children, embrace the water! The kids will be entertained for hours and you can sit and read a book while occasionally dipping your toes in the sprinklers to cool down.

4. Go to the movies– Summer is the time for blockbusters. Grab an iced drink and head into the dark air conditioned bliss and let Hollywood take you away!

5. Stay hydrated- Always carry water with you, this way you will avoid having to shell out $1- $1.50 to the guy on the corner. Better yet, find a local pub with a shaded patio and grab a nice cold brewskie, eh!

Cheers!

6. Get to know your local ice cream/gelato spots– It is a great way to offer your kids a treat when you are secretly coveting a cone yourself. You will be in their good books and everyone gets to cool off. Best of all, it is guilt free because everyone knows that an ice-cream/gelato/popsicle is a MUST have survival food group during the summer months.

An ice cold treat =)

7. Walk on the shady side of the street– I believe that this is the one true way you can tell the difference between native New Yorkers and tourists in the summer. New Yorkers are all walking at a brisk pace on the shaded side of the street trying to avoid the sun by ducking under the biggest buildings possible while tourists are walking in the blazing sun, wiping brows and squinting at maps. Trust me, stick to the shady side.

8. Join a swanky gym and hang out– The pricier the gym the nicer the facilities. Join one that costs what people in other parts of the country pay for rent and then simply go and hang out. The A/C will be pumping, the shower is spotless and there is usually a juice bar. Walk around with a towel, pretend you are either coming or going, hang on a couch and watch the beautiful people πŸ˜‰

9. Hide in your apartment and nap– When all else fails, grump and complain and then just simply collapse on your sofa in front of your window air conditioner and nap until night falls and the temperature cools just a few degrees. Remember everything is still open, this is the city that never sleeps!

10. Stop Complaining!!– Like I said in my previous post New Yorkers love to obsess and complain about the weather. I just want to remind you right now about the brutal winter and spring we just survived. So, put on your sunscreen, grab a hat, venture outside and suck it up Princess!

Snow covered streets!!

HAPPY SUMMER!!!

Always keep your sense of adventure and humor πŸ˜‰
