I woke up this morning and the news from Ottawa was that there was a snow day!!! Oh how I love snow days. A day off work, home with the kids, frolicking in the fresh white stuff and hot chocolate with baileys. Pure winter bliss. I miss snow days!!

We don’t get too many snow days in Manhattan. They are few and far between. We are also getting a big storm but it is in the form of rain and wind. Not quite as glamorous and picturesque or fun to play in. Puddle jumping can be a bit of a bio-hazard ๐Ÿ˜‰ Here are some pics I snapped on my walk today as I tried to dodge the torrential (sort of) downpour. And I will hope for at least one big awesome snow storm this winter, maybe on Christmas Eve? Pretty, pretty please Mother Nature?

Have fun my Ottawa friends and be safe ๐Ÿ™‚ As my friend Nic pointed out the one downfall of snow and something I do not miss is the shoveling! Don’t shovel too hard and if you must, reward yourself with a nice hot toddy!! Happy Wednesday ๐Ÿ™‚

It is really easy to get stuck in a rut and never leave your neighborhood, especially in Manhattan where you can find everything you need within a 20 block radius- well, almost everything. Today I had a opportunity to go to my first ever Soul Cycle community ride. This is a ride which features an instructor that is just completing the training program and is leading a class for the first time. ย It was amazing. I went to support a rider I know, who, if judging by today’s class, will be an incredible addition to the Soul team. The ride was held at Soul Cycle in the West Village. It was the perfect excuse to get out of neighborhood and wander the beautiful streets of ย Soho and the West Village. Unfortunately I didn’t get to take a lot of pics, but I did take a few shots that capture the awesomeness (and unique face) of these neighborhoods. Hope you enjoy them. Have an incredible day and happy Wednesday!

This past Sunday was the ING NYC Marathon. Marathon Sunday in New York City is one of my favorite events of the year. In the days leading up to the marathon it is wonderful to see all of the people from all over the world wandering the streets of Manhattan taking in the sights and getting ready to run through the five boroughs. There is an amazing energy in the air and even the locals seem a little more welcoming and accommodating. How can you not admire and respect the people who are willingly going to run 26.2 miles??!!

This year with my incredible running moms group, I volunteered at the fluid station at mile 22. We were up bright and early for a hearty diner breakfast at 6:30 and then we made our way to 117th and 5th Ave for our day long shift. It was an unbelievable day. Watching the elite athletes run by up close was breathtaking. But the truly inspiring moments of the day belonged to the endless stream of every day runners that were pushing themselves to complete an awesome feat of running. There were many moments throughout the day that I found myself choked up with emotion. And then of course there was the gentleman who came up, grabbed a water and then deadpanned asked if I could call him a cab- beyond awesome. So many moments… cheering on each an every inspiring runner.

I wish all of you runners a HUGE congratulations!!!! You are truly inspirational and on marathon Sunday you contribute a little bit more greatness to our city.

And, it certainly reminded me to go and lace up my running shoes ๐Ÿ˜‰

Happy Wednesday and Happy Running!

I guess it all started with the Rugged Maniac a couple of years ago… Once you run one of these crazy, not for the faint of heart races you end up on a list or Facebook stalks you and posts and ads come your way. At least that is what seems to be happening, I am getting emails, suggestions to like pages and other info about crazy running races. The problem is that instead of deleting them, my insane midlife crisis self looks at the information and then passes it along to my equally irrational friends who encourage reckless behavior such as signing up for the latest ridiculous race. That is why this past weekend, Ron, Jessica and I ended up running the Zombie 5K. This race is a non timed “fun run” where you run 5K while maneuvering through obstacles while being chased by zombies. You start the race with 3 flags and if the Zombies have not captured all your flags by end of the race you are a survivor. If you have no flags at the finish you are infected. Right. The race supports and funds are raised for an amazing foundation that specializes in childhood brain injuries –Kennedy Krieger Institute.

On Saturday we awoke to a chilly day with bright blue skies and we were ready for the Zombie Apocalypse! After a hearty breakfast of bagels and caffeinated beverages we piled into Jessica’s jeep and headed to the Aviator’s Sports Complex in (the) Brooklyn.

A beautiful morning for the Zombie Apocalypse!

When we arrived at the race course we were greeted by other runners decked out in running gear and then of course, there were the zombies. People had put together elaborate costumes and the make-up was professionally done. These were some freakishly scary looking undead. I am not a huge fan of horror movies and was very happy that this was not a night time race. Creepy.

Even the fast food giants will not be safe during the invasion!

Even the fast food giants will not be safe during the invasion!

After making last minute preparations- going to the bathroom a few times, adjusting our flag belts and putting our team uniform together, we checked our gear and headed over to the stage area. The hilarious and talented d.j. was stating the rules (basically keeps your hands to yourself and play fair) and pumping up the energy of the 11:00 wave. Then the real fun began…

Go Team!!

Go Team!!

Our inspirational team shirts!

Our inspirational team shirts! “I like you but if Zombies chase us, I am totally tripping you!”

BEFORE!

BEFORE!

Counting down, they released us on to the course. Unlike other races where the people at the front usually race ahead, in this run everyone tended to stick together as a pack, constantly on the lookout for the walking dead. There is definitely safety in numbers. We climbed over obstacles and tried to strategize on the fly, but basically we all just tried to out run the zombies. And for many it worked and for a great many more it didn’t.

After completing the last obstacle of jumping into a dumpster full of ice cold red tinged water, running through a gauntlet of brain eaters, diving under a fence and belly crawling to the finish, we had made it! Well, two of us had anyway…

AFTER!!

Looking good =)

Unfortunately I was infected. So if you notice any strange behavior over the next few weeks, that could be why. I seem to be easily distracted by brains…

Two survivors, two infected!

Two survivors, two infected!

The good news is that we all celebrated with beer ๐Ÿ™‚

Beer Me.

Beer Me.

I am sure I can speak for the group when I say we had an absolute blast. So much fun. We even met a new friend and teammate, Roy. Thanks for sharing in our adventure, tons of fun spending the day with you.

So, when the next email/post comes around advertising another crazy race, I will probably consider signing up again. Anyone want to join?? I bet you do.

P.S. We did lose one team member to the flu right before the race, or maybe that was just an excuse, haven’t seen Becky in awhile… maybe she has been zombified ๐Ÿ˜‰ We missed you Becky, the next race has your name written all over it!!!

We have been very spoiled with the weather over the past few weeks in NYC. It has been sunny and very mild for the season. In a word, it has been glorious. I feel like I need to cherish these beautiful fall days because pretty soon the dropping temperatures, sharp winds and shorter days of light will arrive. Winter is creeping in right around the corner. So today on the blog I am simply sharing some photos I have taken over the past week that have captured the essence of autumn and it’s loveliness in NYC. It really is my favorite season here. Hope you are having a good week. Happy Wednesday and Happy Autumn!!! ๐Ÿ™‚ image image image image ย  image ย  image ย  image ย  image

It is one of those gloomy, gray, coolish fall days where it would be very easy to pull the covers over your head and go back to bed. Instead I went on an errand run with my friend Jess and took some pics along the way. Hope you enjoy the randomness of my latest adventure wandering the streets of Manhattan. From Chelsea to Harlem and back home again, I love the different vibes in each of the the ‘hoods in this city! Happy Hump Day =)

It is Wednesday and normally I post my Wordless Wednesday or sort of Wordless Wednesday group of pics but not today. Today I am taking a break and blogging about two things that cannot be ignored. One is Breast Cancer and two is Shari Brooks. Sadly, there are very few of us that can say that our lives have not been touched in some way by breast cancer. It is a battle that too many friends, sisters, wives, mothers, women are fighting against or have lost. So, when Shari Brooks an amazing force in her own right and a woman that I adore asked me to help out with her latest fundraising campaign to raise money and awareness for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation of America, I could not say no. Shari’s own mother passed away from breast cancer five years ago and for her the cause is incredibly personal. On her fantastic blog called My Judy the Foodie, Shari has learned to become an amazing cook by lovingly sharing her mother’s recipes in her own endearing and hilarious way. If you haven’t already checked it out and are looking for some delicious, easy to follow (I can do it!) recipe ideas you should head on over to her site.

Shari’s latest amazing idea comes in the form of Bananas For Boobies and it is a super easy, yummy and happiness inducing way to raise money for such invaluable research. I have been having a blast baking up a storm in my kitchen for such a good cause!

The premise is this:

1.ย Go to the Bananas For Boobies website and download the recipe.

IMG_3649

2. Bake the loaves -your house/apartment will smell wonderful and the neighbors will wander over to “borrow” something just to try a taste.

IMG_3650

IMG_3651

IMG_3652

3. Package up your loaves and share it with someone who deserves a little banana chocolately goodness in their lives.

IMG_3666

IMG_3714

IMG_3715

4. One last thing: take a picture of your beautiful Judy’s Chocolate Banana Loaf and share it on the Bake it Happen page on Facebook or email your pic to bananasforboobies@gmail.com. For every photo posted to @BakeitHappen on Facebook, $1 will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

It is just that easy my friends and you will be helping out an amazing cause! I am sending out a challenge to all my friends out there, if I can do it and we all know what a clutz I am in the kitchen, you can too! Hey great white north, I’m looking at you, eh! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thanks in advance for your participation and happy, happy Wednesday =)

Last week my oldest daughter asked if we could go apple picking. She reminded me that the last time the family had gone apple picking was when we lived in Ottawa. I couldn’t believe that it had been that long. I guess it does take a bit more planning to go apple picking when you live in Manhattan. For one thing we don’t have a car and two, it is not always that easy to escape the many weekend activities. The girls really wanted to go and I decided that given how intensely crazy our September had been that an escape from the city and a day trip to the “country” was exactly what we needed. My incredibly generous friend Jessica offered to lend us her jeep and we were off on our day trip adventure. I had been given many suggestions for different orchards within a couple of hours of NYC. After a bit of research on the web, I decided that we would visit Weed Orchardย located in Marlboro, NY, close to Newburgh in the Hudson Valley. It was about an hour and half from Manhattan. Based on traffic and the parking lot at the orchard we were not the only New Yorkers taking advantage of the spectacular fall day.

IMG_3573

The orchard was packed but did not feel overwhelming. There was tons of parking and friendly attendants to direct you where to go. Once in the orchard there were plenty of signs to point you in the direction of the various activities and facilities. We put down a $5 refundable deposit on a wagon and made our way over to the apples. Each row of trees was clearly labelled with the type of apple and markers to indicate if they were ready to be picked. Even with the number of people at the orchard, often times we found ourselves alone. The kids had a blast running through the trees, picking carefully and climbing up to get to the “perfect” find. I enjoyed the sunshine and the laughter.

The scenery was beautiful and the weather was truly spectacular. We picked apples, had fun chasing each other and getting lost in the corn maze and basically just being able to take a deep breath and relax outside of the city. We decided to not stand on line for 45 minutes to sample the apple donuts but we did manage to score some fresh chocolate cookies right out of the oven. We left with a bag overflowing with apples, a huge jug of cider, apple butter and two chocolate candy covered apples. Theย kids considered this a most excellent success and made us promise that we would go back next year. Truthfully, I can’t imagine why we wouldn’t.

These little day trips outside of the city remind me how important even a little change of scenery and pace can be. We all returned to the city a little less stressed, a little sun and wind burnt and definitely happy and content. We also have a bounty of apples. We have been eating them like crazy, there is something about picking out your food that just makes it taste that much better! But, I do have feeling that apple pies, muffins and sauce may soon be filling up our kitchen too ๐Ÿ˜‰

P.S. We did stop at Woodbury Commons Premium Outlets on the way back to the city… all I can say is WOW! I think I will have to save this as a totally different post. It is like DisneyWorld for shopping. I am still a little in awe of the whole experience. Not sure I can go back without a serious game plan and an intravenous caffeine drip. Not for the faint of heart. Serious shopping, people!
