I know it sounds more than a little scary in NYC right now. If I spend too much time looking at the news or pursuing facts and the latest stats about the Coronavirus spread I find myself almost paralyzed with panic or fear. So I have stopped doing that. For my own sanity and well being it is not helpful. I refuse to watch the news, especially the orange bastard who offers little encouragement or insight.

Here is what I am doing. I am staying informed. Each day I get the city alerts and updates. At around 7:30/8:00 pm I get a personalized email in my inbox from Governor Cuomo letting me know what all New Yorkers need to be aware of and and what we need to be doing. I am so very grateful for Cuomo and his direction. He is the calm in this very real storm. We are staying home. We only go out to take the dog and if we absolutely have to get something from the store/pharmacy. We are doing our part to flatten the curve.

I am so very grateful for my girls and Mr. Memphis. We are trying to stay positive. We are getting used to the new norm. We have our ups and downs. We laugh. We cry. We dance. We try and workout. We schedule Zoom, FaceTime and calls with friends. We eat chocolate. We cry. We get angry. We watch a lot of tv. We stay in our comfies. We nap. We read. We stare out the window. We take our temperature. We take long baths. We listen to music. Adriana and Regan make music and sing. We hide. We socialize. We work. We are doing the same things as the rest of you.

This morning I decided I would take Memphis on our normal Saturday walk in Central Park. We were missing our walking buddies, but it was good to have some normalcy. As we entered the park the sun began to rise and a feeling of calm settled in. I couldn’t help but be reminded of how much I love this damn city. It is BEAUTIFUL. It is tough and hard and some days you will wonder if living here is worth all the effort but then it will wrap you up in its arms and remind you of its strength, beauty and incredible community. Yes, we are in the middle of a dark and scary time, but time and time again New Yorker’s are stepping up and looking out for one another. I did not see a lot of people on my walk today and that was a good thing, but those that I did, waved and said “Good Morning” from a distance. A little reminder that we are not alone.

I am having a hard time putting in to words all of the emotions that I felt as I walked, but it felt like deep love for NYC. A reminder that even in the worst of times, this city is resilient, strong and working together to get through this. I needed that little reminder. Sometimes being in your apartment you feel very alone, but walking in the big, empty city, you also realize that in each of the buildings hold the hearts of others just like you, doing the same things as you, and together we will get through this.

Thanks for reading and listening. May you find some peace in your day. Stay healthy, keep laughing and smiling. BIG love to all of you.

This past Friday I was cleaning out the supply closet with a couple of colleagues. We came across a publication of the “87 Observer” from 1960. While going through the newspaper we were struck by a poem written by a 6th grade girl named Debbie Green. I am going to publish it here today to offer up some hope, light and love in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. It is through the eyes of children that we can remember the true meaning of being united, being equal, setting aside hate. So, thank you Debbie Green, wherever you may be now, for a little reminder, especially in these trying days.

“A Poem of Brotherhood”

Human Rights- Debbie Green 6-5

When thinking of human rights,

A phase oft comes to me,

“All men are created equal”

And should be equally free.

Most of us have been made to realize

Just what human rights are,

If only the world would awaken

We might go much further than far.

Someday this whole world may unite,

Unite as never before.

With every land, we’ll clasp a hand

To signify freedom galore.

Someday I’ll glance over my shoulder

And display a widening grin.

For I’ll notice that all are ignoring

The difference in race, creed and skin.

Well, I’m thinking of human rights,

And that phrase is coming to me

“All men are created equal”

But what ever will be, will be.

‘Tis the crazy season! With two weeks to go until Christmas (and Hanukkah starts tomorrow!!) it seems like things are moving at lightening speed. The streets are packed, stores are bustling, tourists are wandering and lets not even talk about the post office. Yikes! I am reminding myself to stop and take a breath every so often- between making cookies, wrapping presents, writing cards and organizing a packing list, oh and working!

But, on Saturday night I did find some time to hang with a cherished friend and sneak away to see the lights and decorations in the City. It is one of my favorite things to do and I don’t always make it a priority. This year I am so glad that I did.

It just so happened that on Saturday we also had our first snow fall of the season. Every time it snows in NYC, I really feel like the city is transformed in to a magical whirling snow globe. The fresh snow makes everything seem beautiful and I swear it is a bit quieter somehow.

We started our adventure off at the GreyDog for dinner on 12th Street and then headed to Union Square to check out the Holiday Market. From there we walked up 7th Avenue past the Flatiron District to Macy’s. From Macy’s we walked up 6th Avenue to Bryant Park and then headed to 5th Avenue to check out the windows along 5th, including Sak’s Fifth Avenue and of course the tree at Rockefeller Center. Our tired and cold feet jumped into a taxi at 59th street and headed home.

Whether you are a tourist or have lived in NYC for all of your life, I highly recommend finding time to do a nighttime walk to see the sights at the holidays. Yes, the crowds can be a bit crazy but there is nothing wrong with fortifying yourself mid walk with a hot chocolate or something a bit stronger to keep your energy up. There are lots of restaurants and pubs along the way! Get out there and then hurry back and get cozy on the couch with your favorite holiday classic, might I suggest “Love Actually”? šŸ˜‰

Hope you enjoy this year’s pics. Wishing you all a wonderful holiday season. May you find some time over the next couple of weeks to do something just for you. Love and hugs, S xo

Sometimes the world just seems a little too overwhelming. Too sad, too disappointing, too broken, too complicated.

Today I woke up in a funk, feeling blue, out of sorts. So I took myself to the park. To restore my energy with the beauty of nature, the simple things. To find quiet and rest my brain. A reset, if you will.

Central Park did not disappoint and I found some peace.

My wish for all of you this Wednesday is love and light. The whole world could use some right now. šŸ’œšŸ’™šŸ’ššŸ’›ā¤ļø

Even after living in this city for almost six years I am still amazed at how fast the weather can change. A reminder that we do in fact live on an island!

This morning was absolutely beautiful. Cooler temps with dazzling sunny blue skies. The perfect morning for a walk in the park with Babette and Memphis.

I am now back in the apartment and the sky is darkening, the wind is picking up and there is a storm warning that includes thunder, lightening and hail!

So, I will leave you with the beauty of Central Park from this morning. Wishing you a fabulous Wednesday. Hope you remembered your umbrella! 😊

There are often times in NYC where you find yourself between appointments or activities and you have to kill time because schlepping home does not make sense. This happened to me today.

It is a beautiful sunny day. Still a bit cool, but after rain and snow flurries, I am not going to complain.

I took advantage of the down time, grabbed a coffee and parked my butt on a bench in Madison Square Park. Excellent people watching, beautiful views and there was even a movie set to stalk. Not a bad way to waste some time. 😊

Happy Wednesday my friends! Enjoy the pics!!

They warned us Jonas was coming. In predictable NYC fashion people rushed to the local supermarkets and cleared the shelves of bread. One can only hope that wine and cheese were bought too. We all speculated, would the city really get hit this time? Last year in preparation for an epic storm, the subways were closed, schools were cancelled and not a single flake fell. Bummer. This time, storm Jonas actually went above and beyond and brought more snow than was even predicted. It was a record storm for NYC, one for the books. The Jonas snowfall total for Central Park is 27.9 inches. Wowza.

We spent Jonas hunkered down in the apartment. I caught up on tv shows and ventured out to take the dog and grab a few pics. The girls played with friends and tuned into their own devices. We found some of grandma’s spaghetti sauce in the freezer and indulged in gourmet hot chocolate given to us as a Christmas gift. The snow fell outside, the wind blew and I felt incredibly grateful to be warm and safe inside. Caught in our own little winter wonderland snow globe.

I love when NYC is forced to slow down. The streets clear, people reach out to help others, small acts of kindness are witnessed- a shared meal, a sidewalk shoveled, a hand up over a large snowbank… People gather on the deserted streets to take in the beauty of the freshly fallen snow. We remember to cherish the little things.

This morning we headed over to our favorite hill to get our sledding on. The sun dazzled, kids laughed and the city slowly awoke, seemingly a bit reluctant to return to its normal pace.

I hope you all made it through the storm safely and found a little peace. It was nice to see winter make an appearance, maybe next time not all at once šŸ˜‰

It is a new year, time to challenge yourself and try things that scare you a little. Recently I have started going to Hip Hop Yoga. In the past I have found most yoga classes to be a little intimidating. I would often leave the class feeling frustrated that I couldn’t do many of the moves or not even remotely relaxed because I was trying so hard to keep up and to not feel foolish. Maybe I was just taking the wrong kind of classes.

A friend of mine introduced me to Hip Hop Yoga at Y7 Studio. Their motto is sweat dripping, beat bumping, candlelit yoga. I was instantly intrigued. I wondered how yoga combined with hip hop would actually work. I was also a little nervous because I am not a huge fan of working out in extreme heat. Remember, I actually like to run in the cold!

The Y7 studios (I have been to Soho and Flatiron) are in great locations close to subways and in funky ‘hoods that make it a fun little adventure. The hip hop yoga class takes place in a hot studio in complete dark with only candlelight to help you navigate your way. The teacher leads you through numerous sequences- a vinyasa with the hip hop beats pumping in the background. I was hooked. It was awesome. It was really hard and the best part is that in the dark no one can really see if you are making mistakes. And quite frankly, everyone is worrying about themselves and in typical NYC fashion, no one cares what you are doing šŸ˜‰ The hot studio also seems to help ease all of those little aches and pains that keep popping up!

I have been to three classes so far- Travis Scott, Tupac and today, Drake. I will definitely be going back. I love the hour long combo of great music, challenging moves and the way it can quiet my crazy mind. Namaste, yo!

Today, the first day of October is gloomy and drizzly with a bit of a chill in the air. But I don’t mind at all. I am ready for the days to get cooler. I can’t wait for the leaves to change. I love everything about the fall season in NYC. Bring it on. Hello October, lovely to see you.

Today I, (plus Jess and R & T) braved the crowds and headed to Super Bowl Boulevard in midtown. It was pretty insane. Crowds and crowds of people were waiting on lines to see the Vince Lombardi trophy, kick a field goal, go down a toboggan run and well, you were pretty much going to have to wait in a huge line to do anything. I just wanted to check out the vibe. It was pretty cool. Even though the sidewalks were tough to walk through, most people were pretty easy going and content to just check out the sights. There were fans from both teams sporting their colors and cheering. There did seem to be more Seahawk fans than Broncos… I wonder what the stadium will look like?

I am glad that I took the time to check out this awesome event going on in our city, even if we did have to bribe the kids with M&M’s to have them tolerate walking through another crowd to get a picture šŸ˜‰ Good luck to both teams tomorrow. Super Bowl mania is officially in NYC and we are loving it!!!
