Posts Tagged ‘Living in Manhattan’

As you all know I am a relative newbie to NYC, many people have told me that you can’t really call yourself a true New Yorker until you have toughed it out and lived here for at least ten years. That being said I think we can all agree that I am truly passionate about New York City and have happily embraced it as my new home. I spend much of my time on this blog charting all of my crazy adventures in this incredible place that I get to call home. I honestly feel very lucky to live here and experience all the ups and downs that life in Manhattan brings with it. So, when my incredibly talented and informed friend Rebecca Levey of Beccarama and KidzVuz invited me to be one of the bloggers to attend a meet and greet with mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio, I jumped at the chance. It will be my first time voting in a NYC Mayoral election and I am excited to learn about the candidates so that I can use my voice in the best possible way.

Bloggers for de Blasio

The Bloggers for de Blasio event was a very intimate event (around 20 or so)  where we were welcomed and immediately put at ease by the hosts and the de Blasio staff. This is the second time that I have been at an event held for Bill de Blasio and I am impressed by how easy going and approachable the people running the de Blasio campaign are. I am not always comfortable at social functions of a political nature but I found that this event was very relaxed and we were encouraged to talk to the de Blasio team, Bill’s wife Chirlane and Mr. de Blasio himself.

IMG_1397

Yes, Bill de Blasio really is that tall and I am really that short 😉

After impassioned introductions from Rebecca Levey and Cynthia Nixon, Bill de Blasio spent time going over his past work within the city of New York including his service on City Council and as Public Advocate, he then began laying out some of his  goals for the city of New York including Universal Pre- K and afterschool programs for all middle schoolers that include academics, culture and athletics. If Bill is elected as Mayor, he will be the only sitting Mayor to have a child currently in a NYC public school. As a parent of two children who are currently navigating through the NYC public school system I have first hand knowledge of how frustrating this process can be and how there is a desperate need for something to be done. Education in this city is hit and miss depending on what district you live in, over crowding and teaching to the test are real problems. I have been incredibly impressed with Bill de Blasio’s  platform on education. During this event he opened up the floor to questions and did not flinch from the tough questions aimed at him regarding the numerous issues revolving around education. His answers were well thought out, sincere and he did not deflect. It was unsurprising, given the audience that most of the questions did revolve around education, economic discrepancies and the future generations of New Yorkers. If I had one complaint was that this meet and greet ended too soon as I would have loved to hear more in depth answers about Bill’s stance on some of the other issues surrounding the Mayoral race. That being said, I get the impression from this campaign team that if I have any questions they would be happy to answer them.

A BIG thank you to Rebecca Levey for the invite and to the de Blasio team for the opportunity to listen, learn and be better informed. A positive, inspiring New York City experience!

Bill de Blasio addressing the questions from the audience

From the de Blasio Campaign:

“Bill knows we only succeed as New Yorkers if we leave no New Yorker behind. Bill knows we need new leadership that lifts up all our people; leadership that understands New York is a city of neighborhoods- five boroughs and everyday people from all walks of life.”

“Bill believes that New York City will grow strong as one city that rises together.”

Yesterday was Ron’s birthday and of course, there was cake. As I uploaded the pic of him and the girls from last night’s celebration,  I started going back and looking at past birthdays and couldn’t help but smile. It is a gloomy, rain blowing sideways kind of day here in NYC and so in order to add a little cheer I decided that wordless wednesday pics would be of birthday cake happiness. I mean there really is nothing more fun than having your cake and eating it too! I hope at least one of these pics makes you smile 😉 Happy Wednesday!

Sometimes I am invited to experience different workshops and activities in NYC and if I am really lucky I get to take the kids with me. This past December I  had one of those occasions when I had the opportunity to take my little drama queen to a musical theater workshop, something that would be right up her alley! I was impressed by how much was accomplished by these amazing kids and instructors in such a short time but I thought it might be fun for my daughter to write about her own experience. So, enjoy and I have a feeling that this will not be the last time you will hear A’s own voice on this blog…

**Also, Broadway Edge is running their next master class workshop for ages 8 & up in Manhattan, the weekend of March 2-3rd. Head on over to their website to check it out! All of my readers will receive a $50 discount if they use this code: MBLOG when they register.

Written by my daughter and guest blogger,  A. Guirguis about her experience participating in a musical theater workshop given by Broadway Edge.

The Scoop on Broadway Edge

Broadways Edge’s Annie workshop  was a great learning environment  filled with very talented kids. We started off the workshop by doing ice breaker games and getting to know one another.

IMG_0678

Then we did fake news reports. I thought it was fun to hear other people’s opinions and I think it was a good way to get people to feel comfortable speaking in front of each other.

The best part was learning the dance moves for the song “It’s A Hard Knock Life” from the musical “Annie”.

IMG_0701

We learned the dance for “A Hard Knock Life” and then we performed the movements while singing the song. We also did journal entries as if we were one of the orphans.

IMG_0731

The workshop is not based on talent but on teamwork. It’s a very good workshop and I had a lot of fun. I would recommend Broadway Edge workshops for kids who are finding their interest in theater and want to explore the fabulous world of drama! Have fun!

We don’t get a lot of snow days here in Manhattan. If we are lucky we get one huge snow dump a year. The kind of storm that forces everyone to slow down, chill and wait it out. And, if you have no where to go, you can’t help but be a little bit excited about it. This is what happened yesterday. A big Nor’easter blew in and Manhattanites fled inside to escape the snow and wind blowing through the city. We hunkered down, played games, read books and watched some t.v. It was all warm and cozy. Heavenly.

But the best part was that, this morning we awoke to the most magical of sights- the city covered in snow. The kids were beyond excited and we dug out our winter clothes, found the sleds and headed to the hill. Manhattan in those first few hours after a snowstorm is truly a breathtakingly beautiful place. We will enjoy this fleeting snow day while it lasts because as we New Yorkers know it will soon turn into giant puddles of slush. Here are the pics of our morning adventures, hope you enjoy them. Stay safe and warm my friends and to all those who must shovel the snow today, I salute you and raise a glass in your direction 😉

We have had very little snow in Manhattan this year. Yesterday we had a little dusting. I took the Dopey dog for a walk and took some pics. Hope you enjoy them. Happy Wednesday and hello February!

Today there is a warm front moving in that will soon be chased out by a cold front… ahh, the joys of winter 😉 So, our run in Central Park was incredibly foggy and breathtakingly beautiful. Here are a few pics, hope you enjoy them. Happy Hump Day my friends! And yes, sorry my Canadian peeps, we are running in only one layer. Maybe winter really is better here (see previous post).

Disclaimer: To all my Canadian friends and family this post is written in total fun and you all know how much I love you but….

I am calling bullshit when it comes to your recent response to my postings about the cold snap in NYC! I have been mentioning on Facebook and twitter that the weather is cold and have received responses such as “NYC has made you soft”, “You are wimping out”, “If you are complaining about NYC weather you will soon lose your Canadian card” etc. And I thought to myself, fair, maybe after three winters in Manhattan I was becoming a bit of softie when it came to weather. Until I was WALKING home the other day from the grocery store, my fingers nearly falling off from the cold and a gust of wind blew past the buildings and created a wind tunnel that nearly knocked me over. At that very moment I fondly remembered back to my suburban Ottawa days where I would grocery shop and then pack my bags into the car and drive home.

It was also at this point that I started thinking about my Canadian winter days. I am not going to discount the weather in the great white north. It is serious business and does NOT mess around. However, I started comparing freezing cold days in NYC vs. freezing cold days in Ottawa. Here is a few comparisons that I came up with. Please, indulge me.

1. Walking VS. Driving- In NYC (unless you are part of the 1% that can afford a driver) you have to walk every where. Yep, you just do. Most of us don’t have cars and even if we do, taking it out for a less than 5 mile drive is just insanity. So, we walk- in the blowing wind, in negative degree temps, in freezing rain- you get the point. When the weather is take your breath away cold in Canada you start your car with the remote car starter, run out and jump into a nice warm car (probably with heated seats) and then head off with a quick stop at the drive- thru Tim Hortons. We even have to walk to Starbucks here 😉

2. Snow- Well Canada, you do have the slight advantage here (or should I say disadvantage?) because you actually have to shovel the snow and drive in it BUT when it snows in NYC we all run for cover to the subway (don’t even think about trying to find a cab) and then we are shoved together with a bunch of snow covered (melting) humanity that smells like wet dog. Also the snow in NYC covers up the street dangers such as frozen dog pee and other unmentionables.

3. Winter Apparel- Canadians are just ready for winter- boots, snowsuits, hats, gloves. NY’ers not so much. This creates many issues in NYC because people are still trying to be fashionable and warm resulting in lots of large hoods and big furry hats. A definite danger because it cuts off all peripheral vision resulting in many close calls with other pedestrians as well as cars while crossing the street against traffic.

4. Taking Out The Dog- Now while NYC dogs are very fashionable in their winter attire- booties and stylish coats, we do not have the option of just shooing said dog out the back door for a quick pee as many Canadians with backyards do. Also, it is during the coldest of nights that the dog will decide that he needs to find the perfect patch of pavement to do his or her thing.

5. Kid Pick Up- I know that there is the pick up line of mini-vans in Canada, this is not a myth. Moms and dads sit in their nice warm cars, reading emails, texting, napping, until their offspring are released and run to the car. Not so much in NYC. We have to wait outside. It doesn’t matter how cold it is out, parents stand together for warmth and wait for the teachers to bring out the kids. And when you think you are right on time the teacher will still be out 10 minutes later.

6. Sending The Kids Outside To Play- See #3, most NYC kids don’t have the proper winter gear so the minute it drops below freezing out door recess is cancelled (don’t get me started on that rant!!), so when the kids go home to their parents, they have been stuck inside all day. Not good. In Canada (a hearty bunch) kids often go outside in backyards and on streets to play even in the crazy cold weather. Consider yourself very lucky to have that option to burn off the energy.

7. Central Heating- Canada, and many of my Ottawa friends, I know you have this wonderful thing called Central Heating as well as big beautiful fireplaces. Most of us in NYC do not. We live in buildings that are at least 100 years old and have very cranky radiators that send the heat up sporadically. Sometimes it is like a sauna, sometimes it is freezing. Right now I am sitting at the computer with a big sweater and a cup of tea. Oh how I miss a thermostat!

So, I guess what I am trying to say is this- Canada we DO have the right to moan and bitch about the weather and NO we are not wimps (well, maybe just a wee bit) but we do have a issues of our own as we struggle through a cold snap. And one thing New Yorkers and my fellow Canadians definitely do share and agree on is that the best way to stay warm is to find a warm and happy place and raise a glass.

I hope I haven’t offended anyone with my little January rant, but hey, I had to do something today as the freezing rain pelts my window!

And to all my Canadian friends I will admit that you win the winter cold war when you are expecting your final snow storm in March or April while I am sitting on a patio 😉

Cheers!

In my continuing efforts to explore the city on Friday nights instead of sitting on my butt in a Starbucks while the girls are at Come Join The Band, I embraced the cold crisp weather and headed to the Highline. It was a gorgeous night and the park was practically empty as I made my way down to the Meatpacking district before the Highline (one of my favorite spots in the city) closed for the evening. Here are the pics. I hope you enjoy and have a fabulous Wednesday! Stay warm. I suggest lots of snuggling 😉

I find that I do some of my best thinking when I go for a nice long walk. There is nothing like a little time to yourself, wandering aimlessly and getting lost in your own thoughts. January in NYC, can be a little bit depressing and gloomy. The holiday lights are all taken down, bare, forgotten Christmas trees line the sidewalks waiting for pick up and the snowless winter weather is usually cold and windy. Think of the empty parks on the set of “Law & Order” 😉

Buildings under the grey skies of winter

All of that being said it is also one of my favorite times to re-connect with the city. The streets are a little bit emptier as people tend to hide indoors and tourists choose warmer destinations. So, the other night while the girls were at an activity, instead of chilling out at a Starbucks or pretending I am hip enough to hang at The Ace Hotel, I took the opportunity to go for a walk. I had no clear destination in mind and just set off across 32nd Street. Soon I found myself in the heart of Koreatown. Dusk was just settling upon the city and a sprinkle of rain was starting to fall.  The mist of the rain was glowing off the many flashing lights. Dodging rain drops and people I weaved my way through the Karaoke Bar heavy streets and continued on my way to 5th Avenue.

I LOVE NY!

I LOVE NY!

Oh la, la… Better keep walking!

As I wandered down 5th, in the lightly sprinkling rain I couldn’t help but realize that this was why I truly love NYC. Every street is different and has it’s own energy, charm and hidden treasures. It is almost like there is a story that is waiting to be written on every block. As I walked,  I could feel my mood lighten. Sometimes I seem to forget how cleansing a walk is. Good for the soul. I guess it can be hard to imagine that a walk in all the hustle and bustle can be relaxing but it truly is. It is like letting yourself get caught up in a wave and letting it take you on its path (just make sure you are not trying to be the only salmon swimming upstream!).

Where am I going with this post? Good question- HA! I guess, in this, a new year, I am just trying to be healthier and happier all round. Getting my head and heart in the right place. I am reminding myself to do the things I love and to take a little bit of extra time to be truly present in what I am doing. A walk in the city I love, to clear the head and re-connect on so many levels seems like a good start to me. Take some time and connect with something you love too.
