After dropping off the girls at camp in New Hampshire, Ron and I decided to stop half way back to NYC in Newport RI, for a little mini-vacay. We had a wonderful time hanging out with our fur-baby- Dopey, chillaxing by the pool, exploring the town of Newport, indulging in some good food and drink and even checking out a mansion or two- one we were allowed in (The Breakers) and others that we could just drool over as we drove along the coastline. We stayed at the Hyatt on Goat Island and it was the perfect setting for a little romantic getaway. Now we are back in the sweltering hot and humid city to a very quiet apartment. Can’t really complain though because I am finding plenty of me time and am already planning some adventures for the upcoming weeks. I will keep you posted 😉 Hope you enjoy the pics from Newport and Happy Wednesday!!!

Summer is finally here and of course, it starts off with a massive heat wave in the city, that is just how NYC likes to roll. Oppressive heat in the concrete jungle 😉 I for one am glad that the lazy, hazy days of summer have finally arrived. I welcome the slower pace, the outdoor patios, fewer people around and the many cool summer activities, concerts and theater events going on. The vibe just feels a little more chillax.

I ended June on a bit of a crazy note, when four of my best girlfriends and I ran in the Rugged Maniac obstacle course race. It was truly an adrenaline blast and we had a ton of fun making our way up and down walls, and other insane barriers through mud and water. So. Much. Fun. Rachel in all her awesomeness ran along side us and took some pics.

July started with the girls home and me trying to entertain them while organizing and planning for their departure for sleepaway camp. We saw a few movies, did some exploring and basically just tried to survive the heat and each other 😉 Have to admit, even though Monsters Inc. is my favorite kid movie of all time, I loved Despicable Me 2, way more than Monsters University.
We spent July 4th hanging as a family, trekking around on our bikes and avoiding the crowds and the fireworks, opting for an apartment picnic and movie night instead.

This past weekend we drove to New Hampshire and dropped off the girls at camp. They are gone for a whole month this summer, and as I sit here typing this I still can’t really process that we have no children for a month. I will miss them terribly but I am not going to lie, I am also looking forward to a little time in Manhattan to explore as an adult.

Today Ron, Dopey and I are hanging out in Newport, RI. As a little 12th anniversary treat to ourselves we decided to spend a couple of days relaxing in this beautiful oceanfront town. It does not suck 😉

Ahhhh summer… So nice to have you back.

School is finally out for the summer and we survived another year or should I say another June. Whoa, the insanity of the end of year activities!! I think we can all agree that it is time for a glass of cold bubbly on the patio. My fifth grader has graduated and will be starting middle school and next year the youngest will be going into third grade. Crazy really, time is flying by… Here are a few of my favorite pics from the last week of school and of course from today, the last day of school. Happy summer everyone!!!! Wishing you a restful, relaxing, fun and most of all, adventurous time 😉

Whoa, June is one crazy month. The endless activities seem, well, endless. You need to be a masterful magician to just keep the scheduling straight and workable. I just keep reminding myself to take slow deep breaths and that the lazy, hazy days of summer are right around the corner!

So, it was a lovely respite yesterday to take time out of the insanity and host a meet and greet for democrat candidate for City Council- Helen Rosenthal. It is impossible to be stressed out when you are standing anywhere near Helen. She exudes a calm strength and positive warm energy. I have met Helen on numerous occasions and I am always struck by how easy she is to talk to as she really listens, actually listens to what you have to say. Yesterday was no different. In this intimate setting she talked easily about her passion for public education, affordable housing, fiscal accountability and her love of the Upper West Side and New York City. What I really like about Helen is her determination, integrity and warmth. If you would like to learn more about Helen and her campaign please visit her website here: www.helenrosenthal.com  I have included some pics from our meet & greet on Tuesday. I hope you enjoy them! Happy Wednesday and to my public school NYC friends, hang in there, one week left until summer vacation =)

Our wonderful mini-vacation to beautiful Paris is drawing to a close. I am now sitting at the airport enjoying a cafe-creme and am at the point where I am excited to return home to NYC, the girls and Dopey dog. We had a wonderful whirlwind trip filled with incredible food, magnificent sight-seeing and cultural immersion. Last night I even found myself dreaming in French! It is time to get back to reality and home for a rest 😉 Paris is for lovers and I have truly felt incredibly spoiled by my fantastique husband on this trip. Here a few more pics from the many, many, many taken on the trip. Happy Weekend!!!

I thought this morning I would share some pics of what the REAL housewives of NYC actually spend their time doing. We are getting ready for our school’s Spring Street Fair that is happening this Saturday. It is a fantastic fundraiser for our amazing public school. My friend Abigail who is an incredible crusader for all things Green and is one of the driving forces behind the school’s recycling, composting and green team has encouraged the students to recycle plastic caps all year and bring them into the school. As part of one of the Street Fair activities, Abby and her class as well as any other student that wants to swing by and help are going to create a fabulous piece of artwork made up entirely of re-using these caps of various shapes, colors and sizes. Last year’s artwork made with plastic bottles was incredible. Here is a pic:

So, back to my ultra-glamorous morning. Abby, Meilan, Robin and I spent a couple of hours sifting through large bags of caps and drilling holes through the caps so that they will be ready for the spectacular art compilation on Saturday. Here are some fun pics of us getting our drill on. Thanks to Robin for taking the pictures. Happy Wednesday everyone!!! MUAH =)

Today is Wednesday and I haven’t really been out and about too much to take any interesting pics. Instead I am going to share a recent purchase. I saw this fridge magnet the other day and was drawn to the words on it “Be Kind. No Exceptions.” The magnet is now on our fridge and I have decided that as I move through the city and interact with numerous strangers on a daily basis, that I am going to try extra hard to choose kindness instead of the other easy reactionary emotions- impatience, anger and frustration. I will also try this with my loved ones too, I am sure they will appreciate it 😉 It seems like such a simple thing, yet we are quick to judge and react negatively especially when times are stressful and rushed. I am going to work on it. I will let you know how it goes. If anything, I think it will give me more moments of peace in the day. Happy Wednesday and Happy Hump 🙂 xox

Since moving to NYC, I have definitely had my share of mishaps, mayhem and mis-guided adventures. Most of them I have blogged about right here. Others are probably better shared over a few beers or a shot of tequila 😉 So, is it really any surprise that I found myself stumbling through the city on Saturday night desperately trying to get home with a migraine headache??!! Um, no.

I decided to spontaneously go out on Saturday night. After a fabulous Queen themed Soul Cycle class I was invited out by a friend to head to Soho for dinner and drinks. It was a night out that I desperately needed after a crazy few days. I really wanted to go. I quickly went home, showered, downed some water and it was as I was getting dressed that my vision started to do some funky things. For those of you who are migraine sufferers, you will know exactly what I am talking about. This is what is called “the aura”, basically for me, I start losing part of my vision and it is replaced by a bright spot with squiggle lines moving across it. At this point I also started to get a little bit of numbness in my hands. No big deal, right? I took some medication with more water and prayed to the migraine gods that it would soon go away and that the pain would not follow.

It worked for a bit, my vision cleared, I met my friends, we hopped into a cab and for a glorious bit of time I was pain free. And then we got stuck in traffic and the taxi jolted back and forth and the pain started and so did the nausea. You would think after thirty plus years as a migraine sufferer I would have learned the lesson that you can NEVER outrun a migraine, the pain always finds you. Apparently in my quest for a a fun night out I lost the ability to actually use my common sense. I hadn’t even had a drink yet. Ugh.

It was at this point, now that we were all the way at the Soho/Tribeca border that I decided I had to bail on my friends. I spotted the subway line and practically jumped out of the cab, begging forgiveness from my friends all the while extremely happy to be on solid ground breathing in cool breaths of fresh air. I steadied myself and made my way to the subway (there was no way I could cab back uptown without vomiting), bypassing the ACE trains, I made my way over a couple of blocks to the 1 line which would basically drop me off right in front of my apartment. While walking there, I was cursing my stupidity, if I hadn’t tempted the migraine gods I would already be in my bed in the my DARK and QUIET room. As I have wrote about before, New York City has to be one of the worst places on the planet when you are suffering with a headache- the city of lights, the city that never sleeps, the city of a million people, the city of sirens… all of these things are amplified in the worst possible way.

But I digress, as I stumbled, squinting (wishing I had my sunglasses to wear at night) to the 1 train, I just kept telling myself I was almost home and that I could do this… Get on the subway, find a seat, close my eyes, keep breathing and I would be home. Right? Wrong. The uptown trains were not running at this station due to construction, I had to go across the street and take the downtown train to Chambers St. and then transfer to the uptown train. At this point, I fleetingly considered just sitting on a bench and resting my aching my head but instead I focused on breathing. I walked across the street and was just about to enter the downtown subway stairs when I heard “Excuse me, are you from NY?, we are lost?” Seriously??? I wanted to just ignore them but the damn Canadian in me made me stop and help them. It was a lovely father and daughter from Cleveland, named Jim and ?, I mean crap, how can I remember at this point?? I was just trying to politely not vomit on their shoes while helping them. Anyway, they were trying to get to the Beacon Theatre (just around the corner from my apt) so I told them to just stick with me and I would help them get there. Luckily they seemed to get the hint that I was not in a very chatty mood.

So, now Jim, ? and I were stuck waiting for the downtown train (9 minutes!!!!) and then we picked up another couple who barely spoke english and needed help getting back uptown as well. We made it to Chambers St. where we waited another 7 minutes (are you f’in kidding me???) until we finally caught an express uptown 2 train. I apologized to Jim and ?, claiming I was tired and rushed to a seat where I promptly closed my eyes and hoped to make it home without incident. And we did, sort of… There was the guy who came through the train pretending to be blind (he was whacking his way around with a broom stick) and coming up to people demanding money, it un-nerved my Cleveland guests but I assured them that you get used to it. When we finally made it to 72nd street and I saw that it would have been another 9 minute wait for the 1, I exited the station with my new friends, pointed them in the direction of the Beacon and even suggested some dinner spots. Dad said “he could kiss me!”, I declined, reminded them to take the 1 train back downtown and then walked to my apt and FINALLY made it home.

As I crawled into the blissful black hole of comfort in the darkness of my room, thankful to finally be home I waited for the quiet to surround me only to hear the full blown temper tantrum of the my neighbor’s daughter. I swear, I can’t make this stuff up even if I tried.

The happy ending to this story is that I slept for 12 hours and fully recovered. And, I also promise to NEVER underestimate the power of the evil migraine beast again 😉

Yesterday, I went on a field trip with R’s second grade class to Grand Central Terminal. We had a wonderful day exploring the many treasures that the 100 year old train station has to offer- whispering corners, the longest track (#34), interviewing Staff Sergeant Perez & Specialist Westchester who were making sure the station was safe, talking to the Station Master, exploring the many shops, standing and staring in awe at the beauty of the architecture, learning about the history of the terminal and finally just soaking in the energy of the hustle and bustle of tourists and residents moving through the space. It was a great trip and I am again reminded of how incredibly lucky we are to live in the city and that our children can go on these awesome adventures at school. Here are some pics I took while we were exploring. Hope you enjoy them. I promise that I will try and find some time to actually do some writing soon! The last two months of school have filled the calendar- Eeek! Paul, I promise to write more, no really I do!! 😉 Have a fabulous Wednesday and I am sending out some extra positive vibes today… just because =)

Today was one of those perfect mornings to stay curled up in bed. The rain was falling, it was dark, warm and cosy. But… the pesky alarm was going off and work, school and the rest of the day’s schedule would not be ignored. By the time we were ready to walk out the door it was pouring outside. Flash flood warnings were out for the city and beyond. It was the type of rain that left you drenched as soon as you stepped out in it. We walked to school armed with our rubber boots, jackets and umbrellas. NYC is not a very easy city to manoeuvre when the there is a heavy down pour. The streets and sidewalks quickly become flooded with gigantic puddles, small dogs and children could easily disappear. And then there is the juggling of umbrellas, I am surprised more people do not lose eyes in the battle for sidewalk territory. Don’t even think about trying to get a cab on a morning like this, unless you have been saving up a year’s worth of karma it just will not happen. So, of course, I did the only sensible thing I could do after I dropped off the kids, I headed to my favorite Starbucks and waited out the storm before embarking on my next errand. I mean really, can you blame me?? 😉

Of course, now it has stopped raining and the sun is even trying to peek out. It always seems to happen like this- it rains hard just as everyone is leaving in the morning ensuring that children and adults alike will spend the remainder of the day with wet feet and pant bottoms. I guess the only saving grace is that a spring rain is so much nicer than a winter rain. The nice bonus of a good downpour is that the streets of Manhattan are already looking and smelling a little bit cleaner… Have a wonderful Wednesday my friends. Enjoy the pics =)
