Controversial Equinox Ad at the corner of 77th/Amsterdam- right beside the playground at an UWS elementary school

Recently in our neighborhood there has been much discussion and debate about the current Equinox Fitness advertising campaign. The heated debates are sparked by the above ad and it’s placement at a street corner that is right beside one of the local public elementary schools on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Approximately 700+ kindergarten to 5th grade students (with their parents/caregivers) as well as middle school students from surrounding areas walk by the advertisement daily on their way to and from school. Much of the debate has been centred around the fact that many parents think that Equinox acted irresponsibly by advertising in an area that is clearly populated with school age children.

Manhattan is no stranger to this type of shock advertising. In fact you can see it all over the place. I first saw the Equinox ads in the Chelsea area. I thought that they were funny but that they were clearly targeting a different audience than myself. The ads did not make me want to run out and join their gym. At this point in my life I try and stay away from a gym whose ads seems to suggest a workout that involves casual sex, skimpy attire and obsession with body image. No thanks, I like to sweat, make-up free without any judgement on my abs or lack there of.

We actually walk by two Equinox ads on the way to school

I guess this is why I am a little confused by Equinox’ choice to run their ad campaign so close to the school. What demographic is their brand trying to reach out to? Yes, this intersection is a high traffic area but instead of gaining positive attention from the advertising campaign, they have received the exact opposite effect due to the fact that parents have had an immediate visceral “momma/daddy” bear reaction to a depiction of sex on the street corner. I am not sure that this is a wise decision given the fact that there are a numerous fitness establishments to chose from that are within walking distance of the school including the JCC, Pure Yoga, Reebok and NYSC.

As a recent implant to NYC, I find the whole uproar around this ad campaign quite interesting to watch. After all, we are residents of Manhattan, the mecca of advertising. We are bombarded by billboards on a daily basis and well, we all know what Times Square looks like =). I am constantly explaining the meaning of different advertisements to my daughters as we walk down the street. Shock ads are everywhere and unless you intend to live in a bubble, I suggest that you use this type of advertising as a way to open discussion. We have to walk by more than one ad on the way to school that provokes some kind of question. Instead of trying to shelter my children from the ad, I explained why I thought the ad was inappropriate and we also discussed the way marketers target certain groups of people. To be honest, they became bored pretty fast and forgot about the whole thing when we saw a display for Valentine’s cupcakes.

We decided to live in this amazing city with it’s incredible opportunities as well as it’s pitfalls, one of them being the undeniable fact that in some ways NYC kids grow up a little bit faster. Yes, I think Equinox acted irresponsibly in placing a clearly sexual ad right beside an elementary school. But as parents, it is our responsibility to address these discussion-provoking opportunities not avoid them. That being said, I am really glad that my eight year old seemed oblivious to this ad (below) that popped up in the subway not long after we moved here. Some discussions can wait 😉 Have a great day, and alway remember to try and keep a sense of humor!

Today I pounded the pavement canvassing the neighborhood for donations for our upcoming school auction. It was a beautiful day- bright, sunny and not too cold. I enjoyed getting caught up in the hustle and bustle of the sidewalks. It is way more interesting to be a part of the energy of the city than watch the world pass by from a car window. As I popped in and out of the local businesses I took a few pictures trying to capture another “normal” day in NYC. Hope you enjoy!

Today is Valentine’s Day and while walking through the streets this morning, I have observed many men (and a few women) walking around with bouquets of flowers. The card stores are packed and the pastry and chocolate shop windows are deliciously decorated. And I have mixed feelings about the whole darn day.

Back in University, living in an all girl residence, Valentine’s Day was insane. There were two reactions to the day- 1) if the girl had someone in her life she went all out- planning for the big night and obsessing over what the guy in her life would be getting her OR 2) if you were single it seemed like the only thing to do was to act like you were going to die alone. I think this is where I began to start being a bit anti- V-Day. This attitude of mine, has not been helped by the fact that I also taught high school for thirteen years and Valentine’s day with all of the out of control teenage hormones and insanity brings its own special kind of crazy. It just seems like on this day of love there can be a whole lot of tears. I feel for the guys (and gals) out there stressing about getting the perfect gift that expresses exactly how they feel about his/her loved one. I think the whole day has totally gone over the top.

That being said, I have decided to put my own ambivalence aside and embrace the day. Why? Because I have children. Two little girls who are romantics in their own right. They believe in fairies and happy endings and heroes. I am certainly not going to crush that sense of wonder and happiness. Both girls painstakingly took the time to write out Valentine’s for each person in their class. Carefully picking the right card for each of their friends. At this age, they wouldn’t even think of excluding a single person. A, even added some extra hearts for her “special” Valentine. She told me that today is the day that you can express your feelings to someone without any consequences. I guess she is right. There will be plenty of time for the lessons of “growing up” and heartache. I would like to delay that as long as possible. I couldn’t help but smile as they greeted people they knew on the street with a hearty “Happy Valentine’s Day”. It reminded me that today does not have to be all about getting caught up in the commercialism and stress it can quite simply be about sharing a smile and spreading some good feelings… warmth and love.

As for me, I am going to use today as an excuse to indulge in a beautifully iced cupcake 😉 Oh, and I might even find a moment to remind myself of how lucky I am to be surrounded and loved by such amazing family and friends. My wish for you is that you take some time to remember that you are loved too. Happy Day!! xoxo

A sunny walk in Riverside Park

It is February and with is comes the feeling of blah. Even though the days are getting longer and it is the shortest calendar month, it always seems like February is a tough month to slog through. This winter in NYC has been a tough one, very cold days and lots of snow. I am told that it is an unusual winter. To me, it just seems like winter. And February is the month when we all complain about the fact that winter is still here, the snow is no longer pretty but turning a lovely shade of grey/black (especially in NYC) and that we are sick and tired of wearing coats, boots, hats and sweaters. February is the month where we find ourselves daydreaming of flip flops, umbrella drinks and dinner on a patio. Is it any wonder that most people head off for a warm vacation at this time of year?

It is during these February days that I tend to get a little, well… blah. I find myself getting into a bit of a funk- focusing more on the negative than the positive. This bothers me and I feel like a need a bit of a shake up. So, over the past couple of days I have decided to focus on the little things that matter. The simplest of things that make a day better. Here are a few of the small things that have made me smile over the last couple of days.

*the perfect cup of tea and the time to finish it while reading “People” magazine

*finding a new t.v. show that I can’t stop watching, because it is just that good- “The Good Wife”

*feeling the warmth of the sun on your back while taking the dogs for a walk in the park

*hearing your youngest daughter start to read her first words outloud

*hearing your oldest daughter say that “she is beginning to love math”- whose daughter IS she?? 😉

*a text from a faraway friend

*no line at Trader Joe’s

*a shared smile with a stranger

*A & R fighting over who has the best gym teacher and realizing that they are really starting to feel at home

*walking down the street and not seeing a single other person, a rarity in NYC

*snuggle time on the couch

*two dogs that lie at your feet while you are typing on the keyboard

*laughing with a friend until your stomach hurts at inappropriate cards and books at B&N

*meeting new friends for coffee

*telephone conversations with old friends

*Big sis reading a bedtime story to little sis

*looking forward to a weekend of hanging out with the family

Because sometimes it is just the tiniest of moments that make your realize how truly lucky you are. Have a fabulous weekend =)

I have been feeling a bit under the weather over the past couple of days… there are lots of yucky winter viruses going around. However, on Monday morning the sun was shining and the temperature was pleasant, so I decided to drag my butt out of the apartment and go for a walk through Central Park. I am constantly amazed by the never ending pathways, the beauty and peace in the park. It was a glorious morning, hope you enjoy the pics! =)

There is something wonderful about Saturday mornings. Maybe it is the simple fact that there is the absence of the frenetic pace and hustle and bustle of the weekday morning rush and panic. There really is no better feeling than waking up without an alarm clock rolling over, looking at the time and realizing you can leisurely stretch and get out of bed on your own time. And the best thing of all is that  you can stay in your jammies if you want to! This morning Ron came back from walking the dogs with H&H Bagels and Starbucks. Have I mentioned lately how much I love this man??!! We sat down at the table and read the NYTimes while the kids watched cartoons. Total Bliss.

I have really come to appreciate the weekends in New York City. It is the exact opposite of what life was like in Ottawa. Instead of rushing to get groceries, jamming in tons of activities, spending the day in the car racing from one thing to the next, we try to take it easy. The pace during the week is pretty intense. Ron works long hours, the girls have homework and other activities so we like to think of the weekends as family time. I am taking full advantage of the fact that I do not have to grocery shop on the weekend with the rest of the crowds and avoid the markets at all costs. If we run out of milk, I send Ron. Weekend shoppers are like extreme racers, get out of their way if you want to make it out alive! Since we are still new to the city we usually spend some part of the weekend exploring one of the neighborhoods or seeing a sight or museum. Or sometimes we just hang out and go to a movie.

Today we headed on down to Chelsea Piers where the girls are taking classes. Yes, we actually signed them up for classes on Saturday, mostly because we fell in love with the area and the facility. Also, we liked the fact that they could attend midday and we wouldn’t have to rush out first thing in the morning. It is pretty stress free. We take the subway down to Chelsea and then walk a few blocks to the pier. The girls attend their classes and Ron and I get to chill out and watch them in an area with lots of brightly lit seating and wi-fi. Afterwards we can go to Chelsea Market for a late lunch, wander into the village or hop on the subway to head off on a different adventure.

After classes today we headed back uptown. Ron bravely stopped at Trader Joe’ s and Fairway for some Super Bowl munchies while I took the girls home. It is a cold, damp, gloomy day in Manhattan. There is a threat of freezing rain. It is a perfect night to cuddle up with popcorn, hot chocolate and a family movie and that is exactly what we are going to do. Tomorrow will bring church, laundry, more family time, good friends watching the game… but lurking right around the corner is the madness of Monday. I think that is why I love Saturday, it is nicely cushioned between Friday and Sunday. A true day of relaxation. Enjoy!

Okay, by all accounts, this has been one hell of a winter in NYC. Now, I am not really a cold or snowy weather wimp but one thing I do not like is ICE. Today we woke up to the streets covered in a glass like coating. Yes, it looks pretty but it is not very friendly in a walking city. There really is not much to say about it except, UGH. I will take the cold and snow any day over icy rain and sleet. It is supposed to turn to rain later on in the day which will increase the chance of flooded streets and sidewalks. I think that this is a very good day to hide in my apartment and maybe start searching for warm weather mini-vacations! Where did I put my cup of tea?! Stay warm and enjoy the pics =)

When we moved to Manhattan, the old time New Yorker’s promised me that winters were mild with very little snow. Well, I am waiting for that weather because so far this winter has been very similar to the crazy and unpredictable weather in beautiful cold and snowy Ottawa. On Thursday we were hit with what the media was calling a “monster” snowstorm. Now, Manhattan is full of drama queens and I was sure that they were over exaggerating. But, sure enough we woke up to find the city covered in 16 inches. A pretty decent storm, even by Canadian standards.

The kids were ecstatic because it was a snow day! The schools were closed. I am sure there were cheers throughout the city and a few groans from the parents. I was relieved that we didn’t have to start the crazy morning rush. A snow day, such magical words! I taught for 13 years and had never once heard this much wished for announcement. The girls and I decided to take full advantage of our snow day. First thing on the agenda was a leisurely breakfast of eggs and toast while watching cartoons. We had to conserve our energy because we had a very important playdate to go sledding. No not tobagganning, no one knows what that means here, they call it sledding 🙂

Heading out to go sledding!

The sledding hill

We had a fabulous time. The weather was perfect, not too cold and the sun peaked out every once in a while from behind the clouds. The snow was packed down to perfection on the hill and there was some very fast sledding. A, was caught a bit off guard when she managed to get big “air” but managed to laugh at her massive wipe out. R was content staying on the safer, smaller hills. Rachel and I watched from our snow chairs. The only thing missing was a nice cold beer. Really, some young entrepreneur should really get on that.  Serving drinks to parents at the sledding hill on a snow day could result in some pretty good cash…

Ahhh...snow!!

The super comfy snow chair

Snowman!

We finished the day back at the apartment for pizza, hot chocolate and movies. Everyone crawled into bed that night exhausted after a fun filled day. It was awesome. The girls were hoping for another snow day and I was looking forward to sending them back to school. The weather forecast for this week calls for even more snow. My new friends are starting to blame me saying that I brought the weather with me. I am not quite sure why we are getting soo much “winter”, but I am loving it. If anything, it gives Manhattanites something to talk and complain about. Another similarity they now have with their neighbors up north, eh!

Beautiful!

Dopey and A, daydreaming.

For the first time since moving to NYC, I desperately missed two things this weekend: a backyard and a car. We are in a deep freeze right now in Manhattan. It is Ottawa cold. For my American followers- Minnesota cold 😉 It is the kind of cold that when you step outside you lose your breath for a moment and your eyelashes stick together. Yep, it is cold.

So, normally Ron takes the dogs out first thing in the morning but since he is away in Florida (lucky bum) it was up to me. For the past four mornings I have bundled up and taken the dogs out (at 6:45!) in the tundra like weather to do their business. Oh, I swear I would have done almost anything to be able to just boot them out the back door while watching from the kitchen sipping tea in my p.j.’s! On the positive side, you sure wake up fast while picking up poop in biting wind chills.

The other thing I missed this weekend was a car. I desperately missed my lovely car starter and seat warmers while planning my daily adventures. Manhattan is a walking city. If you want to avoid cabin fever and actually get out in the winter, you have to do some amount of walking even if it is to and from the subway. Oh, how I wished I could just go from the house to the garage to the car to my destination. Nope, not going to happen. And trying to get a cab on a frigid winter day in NYC, is just as hard as trying to get a cab in a raging down pour. Not worth the hassle.

The girls were not going to settle for just hanging out in the apartment on Saturday, so the inevitable “What are we doing today, Mommy?” question started just after breakfast finished. They did not want to go to a museum that they had already been to and I didn’t feel like seeing “Yogi Bear” for a second time (help me!) so I tried to convince them that we should go to the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art). It is one of my favourite spots in the city and I thought they would really enjoy it if they could get past the stereotype that looking at art was boring. They were still resisting, so I visited the MOMA website and looked under the discovering the MOMA with children section. One of the suggestions was to encourage the children to bring a pad of paper and pencil so that they could sketch their favourite pieces. I suggested this idea to A & R and they were really excited about it.  We stopped at Duane Reade, picked up some sketch pads and away we went.

A & R getting ready to sketch at the MOMA

Even though it was a Saturday, the museum was not overly crowded and the girls were able to easily sit down in front of a piece of art and sketch it. The security guards never once asked them to move and other patrons were supportive. They were totally immersed and eagerly printed out the name of the artist so that we could go home and read about the artist and his or her works on the internet. I am saving this activity for the next time they are bored, they can use their sketches to recreate the artwork on paper with colour. I think Aunt Sandy and Sads will be very proud 😉

Artist at work!

Getting the right perspective

The girls ended up having a great time. R even said to me that she actually like the museum. We had many lively discussions about what exactly constituted “art”. They were a bit confused about some of the more modern pieces including the painting that consisted of a straight line and the sculpture that was made out of hay. LOVED these discussions!! While heading back to the subway we stayed warm by stopping at Magnolia cupcakes and ToysRUs =). That night we watched the new “Barbie” movie. A perfect day with the girls. If only I didn’t have to leave the warm and snuggly apartment to take the dogs out…

Central Perk from the t.v. show "Friends" (NBC)

Over the past week I have really begun to see the importance of the local coffee shop and how it is used in the culture of city life. Remember how much time the “Friends” gang spent in Central Perk even though they had fabulous (and big) Manhattan apartments?

If you ever want to get a slice of life in New York City, walk into a neighborhood coffee shop, order some java, squeeze yourself into one of the crowded seating areas and people watch. It is fascinating to gaze upon all of the different people from various walks of life that enter and exit the cafe. If you are lucky you can even eavesdrop on a nearby conversation and hear snippets of gossip or business transactions. Sometimes you can even begin a conversation with a total stranger and have a fascinating discussion. At some places the personalities of the baristas themselves are worth the price of the beverage.

I have spent a lot of time in our nearby breakfast/coffee joint this week. Unlike most establishments in Manhattan it has an abundance of seating and is an excellent meeting spot. This is where I can come and meet some of my fabulous new friends for a much needed jolt of caffeine, after drop-off in the morning. The daily routine of getting the girls out the door is always hectic and rushed, sometimes it is the hardest part of the day. I look forward to the laughs with the ladies at our morning meet-up. These terrific women have also been an integral part of my transition to the city and the school. They have helped me to find doctors, camps, stores, getaways, and the list goes on… I feel extremely grateful to call them friends.

I think New Yorkers tend to use the coffee shop as an escape from their apartments. Judging by the amount of people working tirelessly on their laptops, it is a way for people to get out of their homes and work in a warm and cosy change of scenery. Even if they are not interacting with others, they are surrounded by people and that can be a lot nicer than talking to yourself in an enclosed space 😉 It is also a convenient location to meet. Manhattan is a walking town, people don’t get into their cars and meet at the mall and browse the stores socializing. We live in apartments scattered throughout our neighborhood. It is convenient for everyone to meet at a central cafe. Unlike the “Real Housewives of New York” most of us do not have large sitting areas with a “staff” readily available to serve refreshments to our guests, so it is logical to meet at a place where we can get food and drink for a reasonable price.

And meet we do… The amount of planning taking place at the neighborhood coffee shop is amazing. Next time you walk in, take a look around you. Parents are planning school events and fundraisers, business types are plotting world domination, teenagers are organizing the weekend agenda, budding writers are writing the next big thing…you never know who you could be sitting beside. Or it just might be someone who needs an extra shot of caffeine to get them through the rest of the day, hard to say really.

I know that I have lots of fun making up stories about all of you, them! Save me a seat…
