The girls have been at sleepaway camp since Sunday and yes, it has been VERY quiet around here. No kids for two whole weeks, a mini vacation. And what better way to spend it then by enjoying some of New York City’s best spots without children. So, this morning I took advantage of the “me time” and explored the MET- Metropolitan Museum of Art Β with my good friend Rachel. We didn’t have to listen to one “I’m bored” as we leisurely strolled through the exhibits that WE picked out. It was wonderful! Here are some of my favorite pics from our very civilized adult outing. Hope you have a fabulous Wednesday!

P.S. I did however, buy postcards to send to the girls, I haven’t totally forgotten about them πŸ˜‰

The air is oppressive today in the city. In fact as I type this a big old thunderstorm is rolling in and I can’t wait. Hopefully it will clear out the soupy 100 degree weather and the whole of NYC will be able to take a collective less stinky deep breath πŸ™‚ Luckily, I have a few good connections and my friend Rebecca from the amazing tween websiteΒ KidzVuzΒ (if you have tweens and they haven’t visited the website yet, I ask why not??!!) invited me and the girls to go see a sneak peek of theΒ AT&T Dumbo Arts FestivalΒ at theΒ Children’s Museum of the Arts. I have never been to the CMAof NY and I have to tell you it is a pretty impressive space where kids can truly explore all areas of creativity. The girls had a blast trying out self portraits, painting, still life drawing and animation. I loved wandering around in the space checking out the incredible artwork and leafing through brochures that showcased fabulous looking art classes and camps. And… big bonus it had Central Air- Woot!!

I think the fam will definitely have to head on down to DUMBO at the end of September to check out the festival. Right now, I am posting these pics and then heading back to my seat on the couch infront of the A/C. Hope you are all well and surviving another Wacky Wednesday πŸ˜‰

Today I had to suck it up and brave going to Times Square to go to ToysRUs. R’s birthday is rapidly approaching and there is one thing that she wanted that could ONLY be found at ToysRUs. So, because I am such an amazing mom, I braced myself with caffeine (should have been a shot of tequila), hopped on the subway and headed to Times Square. I was there just before the store opened and was already amazed by how many tourists were out and about. My visit to midtown lasted all of 45 minutes- stealth- in and out, no ferris wheel rides, pics with characters etc. but I did snap a few shots of what Times Square looks like on a summer morning in July. Hope you enjoy and have a wonderful Wednesday!!

It really is hard to believe that this is our third summer in Manhattan. Some days it feels like we just moved and on other days I feel like I have lived here forever, weird. What I have noticed is that summers in Manhattan are a bit different than in other places. In NYC people are always talking about leaving for the summer. “When are the kids in camp?” “When are you heading upstate?” “To the Hamptons?” “On vacation?”. There is a mass exodus by the local residents. I know in other places people look forward to vacation time and escaping to the cottage, camping etc. but it just doesn’t seem to happen on the same level as Manhattanites. But, I guess NYC always has to up the intensity even on vacationing, right? πŸ˜‰

Perhaps the drive to escape the city happens because when the first heat wave hits it can seem a bit unbearable and oppressive. In a city where people rely on getting around on foot or by using public transit in a very fast and to the point way, slowing down and escaping to the shadows or hiding indoors just doesn’t seem to work very well. The concrete jungle sure does get hot and in a city with so many people I have noticed that as the temperatures rise the patience level lowers. Well, mine does, anyway. People can be pushed to the brink by riding in a non air-conditioned subway car! And, as much as NYC loves tourists (I have been one many, many times) locals are not always fond of the extra people invading the city and adding to the crush of humanity. As a resident now, I just wish the tourists would learn to not stop in the middle of the sidewalk…

I’m Melting!!!!

Summer vacation can also be a bit disconcerting and chaotic, routines are in upheaval and there is the pressure to do something, anything… It can also be a bit lonely as friends (both the kids and mine) go their separate ways for two months. This year I have embraced summer in the city and have tried to find a nice balance.

So, now that our honeymoon stage has worn off a little bit, meaning that we don’t always want to go out and explore each and every sight. Okay, meaning that the kids are tired of me dragging them to each and every new cool thing I find, I think we have become a little bit more local this year. What I mean by this is that we have arranged a summer that has a nice balance of enjoying the many amazing things that are happening in NYC in the summer as well as getting a bit of break from Manhattan and taking some time to get away.

The girls are doing a couple of weeks of sports camp in the city and then they are also spending some time at camp “mom” with me where we still seek out cool new spots to explore. There are so many amazing things going on right now, that I promise they will not utter the words “I’m bored” more than once a day πŸ˜‰ This is also the first year that our girls are both going to sleepaway camp. We are all excited and nervous about this experience. Most city kids do this and I think it will be an incredible experience. The ultimate get away in beautiful camp country with opportunities to do and experience all of the non-city type things- swimming in a lake, horseback riding, archery, climbing, hiking, water skiing, etc. I would be jealous except that it means that Ron and I get two whole weeks in Manhattan together where we don’t need to worry about babysitting to go out- woohoo!!!!!

At camp “mom” we headed to the Liberty Science Center- LOVED IT!

Escaping the city sometimes just means getting a different view of it- Lower Manhattan from New Jersey

I guess what I am trying to say in this bit of a ramble of a post is that we are getting comfortable with our new life in Manhattan and are embracing the local customs, so to speak. Camp, mini-getaways, vacation time, day trips and favorite ways to beat the heat are easier to navigate this year. I am settling in to this life and learning the ropes. Sometimes you need a little bit of a break from the Big Apple to come back and truly enjoy why so many tourists flock to the city every day =) It also helps to ease the stress, take a fuller breath and of course up the patience quota even on those really hot days.

Hope you are all enjoying these lazy, hazy days of summer.

Where will our feet take us today?

Yesterday was our first real July 4th in NYC where we celebrated in the traditional (or so it seemed) American way. We were away for July 4th last year and had only been in the city for two whole days on our first official July 4th, three summers ago. This year, we were lucky enough to be invited to our friend’s pool club for the day. So we easily rented a car and escaped the city heat by driving over the George Washington Bridge and into the Palisades area, where we spent the day frolicking in the water and chillaxing in the sun. After the pool, we headed into the town of Nyack, New York to have dinner, wander the charming main street area (with a stop for ice-cream), meandering towards the water and finishing the fabulous day by viewing a spectacular show of fireworks. It was a wonderful day with friends and family. Here are some pics, hope you enjoy them. Happy Thursday πŸ˜‰

Happy 4th!

Well, I did my first official smokin’ hot sweaty run in the city today. I think the temperature was closing in on the 90’s but I don’t really want to know because if it really was only low 80’s I really might combust on our next run!! NYC in the summer can be unbearably hot, the concrete jungle absorbs the heat and it can feel like you are in a walled in sauna. And, let’s not even talk about the smells… But, I am determined to keep up my running this summer. So determined that I signed up for a 1/2 marathon in Philly in September. I know, only a truly crazy person (and her running friends) would sign up Β for a 1/2 marathon to motivate themselves to run throughout the summer. Insane. Maybe the heat really has gotten to my brain!!

But, we are doing it and will continue to motivate and encourage each other and we will keep up the running. And it is summer after all, so if we have to stop for cool drinks and popsicles along the way as we add on our miles, I truly believe that is acceptable. Today we were able to finish our run with an incredibly well earned run through the sprinkler. Thank you to the NY Parks Dept for the perfectly placed water relief and to Robin for encouraging us to jump on in. Who says the kids should have all the fun??!! Hope you are all having an amazing summer and are finding your own ways to keep and stay cool!! =)

A post- run cool off through the sprinklers in Central Park!

Today is the official last day of school for the girls or as they like to say- the official first day of summer! The DOE scheduled a crazy half day of school today after two days off and I gave the girls the option to go or not. They both chose to go as they wanted to squeeze in one last good-bye to their friends (the remaining ones that would be there) as well as their incredible teachers. They both LOVED their teachers this year. I can’t blame them, they lucked out on the teacher lottery and had top notch teachers. In fact, we had been pretty fortunate at our spectacular NYC public school. As much as the education system is intense and insane here (a rant for a different post) the teachers at our school are truly some of the best. But alas, another year has ended and I can’t believe how fast my daughters are growing up. Here are a few pics from the last day. Hope you are all enjoying the start of summer!!! Happy Wednesday xo

This past weekend our Saturday adventure took us to our new favorite neighborhood to explore- Tribeca. I am not sure why we haven’t spent more time here as this is such an incredible spot for food, culture, shopping and parks. It is a truly wonderful area to wander around in. We hopped off the subway at Chambers St. and headed toward the Hudson River eager to check out Pier 25 which includes a playground, mini-golf, beach volleyball courts, basketball, a skating park and places to just sit down and enjoy the phenomenal view. It was heavenly. I felt like we had escaped the hustle and bustle of the city as we casually strolled along the river. After some mini-golf and meandering we decided to head back in a few blocks to the beautiful Washington Market Park where the girls cooled off in the sprinklers at the playground and we relaxed shaded by the big leafy trees. We even checked out a local pub for Linner (lunch/dinner). Here are some pics from the day! I highly recommend exploring this nabe, I think it just might be on the top of my list right now!! Enjoy and have a super-fantastic Wednesday!

A Saturday exploring under the blue skies… nothing better.

June is turning out to be a blur. All of the days seem to be running together… one end of year presentation, picnic, get-together, meeting into another. I have to constantly be looking at my calendar and setting reminders for myself so that I will not miss something. I wish I had the technology to divide myself into two, but no huge science brain has figured that one out yet, so instead I gulp caffeine at an alarming rate and sprint from one activity to another =) I know that we are all in the same barely remaining afloat boat. Luckily these events are the fun ones, the culmination of hard work, the showing off of all of the great stuff that our kids have been doing throughout the year. As much as I complain about the crazy, I love watching every single presentation and going to every get together, the smile on the kids faces makes everything alright in the world. Here are a few pics from our recent insanity, the blur that June has become. So, if I owe you a phone call, a lunch date or if I simply passed you on the street in a bit of a daze, I apologize, the hazy lazy days of summer will be here soon ;)!

I am always amazed by how closely Manhattanites can parallel park their cars. I often wonder how they get out of such tight spots. Although, judging by the bumpers on most cars there is a lot of nudging. The other night as I was walking Dopey, I paused to look at the beauty of an older Porshe and then had a mini panic attack on behalf of the driver when I realized how closely the other two cars were parked in front of and behind it. I really hope he or she did not want to get out of that parking spot in a hurry. Yikes. Here are the pics and proof again that driving and especially parking in NYC is NOT for the faint of heart. Have a great Wednesday πŸ˜‰

A more practical driving choice for the city? At least you could probably pick it up and move it πŸ˜‰

Alas, I think I will stick with this option =)
