FORTY!

The big day has passed. Yesterday I turned the big 4-0. Yep, I have entered into a new decade. And, I have to say, I was pretty spoiled. Last weekend I hung out with some fabulous friends in Mt. Tremblant, on Wednesday my incredible NYC girlfriends took me out to a wonderful dinner at TAO, on Friday Ron and I ate ourselves silly at Scalini Fedeli and yesterday I was showered with love by the girls. I am definitely feeling like a very lucky woman. But I guess it would be a little bit weird if I turned forty and didn’t take a bit of time for some reflection.

Here I am around 1, I know I was pretty darn cute 😉

The other day someone said to me “Are you okay with turning forty?”. I thought that it was a bit of an odd thing to say. Whether I am ready or not the reality is I AM turning forty and really there is nothing I can or could do about it. I could try and lie about my age but once you have kids that is definitely impossible, my girls went around telling everyone all weekend that it was their mom’s birthday and that she was turning forty… thanks kids =) And then of course there was a lot of people telling me that 40 is the new 20 and that is what really got me thinking and reflecting. Is 40 for a woman really that freaky, am I old, do I wish I was 20 again? Good questions.

A few weeks back I tried to watch the show Girls on HBO and I tried, I really tried but I just didn’t like it. I think one of the reasons I couldn’t even get through the first episode was because I just couldn’t relate to that whole crazy 20 something lifestyle anymore and I didn’t want to go back there either. The whole awkward dating, casual sex, trying to find yourself, getting your first job, trying to be independent… NO thank you. Also, I see enough of those girls on the subway, the ones that only talk in questions, you know what I am talking about -“I am going to this party this weekend?”, “there is a new store on fifth avenue?”, “Steven and Katie are fighting?”(insert annoying lilt at the end) that I really didn’t need to watch it on my tv. Don’t get me wrong there could be a bit of jealousy involved too- sleeping in on weekends, running without a sports bra, never needing a babysitter, all envious things but not nearly enough to make me want to be 20 again!

I mean there are definitely times when I am feeling the whole age thing. How many times can I possibly get a Groupon for botox, teeth whitening, magic diet pills or laser hair removal before a little bit of anxiety about the appearance doesn’t start to settle in. And of course there are subtle changes to the old bod, for those of you in my generation and beyond, you know what I am talking about, all the rest, I will spare you the details and you can keep the romance (and denial) alive for a few more years 😉 Today I had to google YOLO because I didn’t know what it meant. The irony is it means You Only Live Once.  So, yes there are somedays when getting old(er) is a bit scary. Although, c’mon twenty somethings it is our age bracket that has brought back a little bit of sexy with “50 Shades”…

On the whole, 40 you are looking pretty damn good. I am living in a city I love. I am surrounded by incredible family and friends. To me 40 brings with it confidence, compassion, acceptance, understanding, strength, lessons learned and of course a willingness to tackle new adventures even if it scares you. I have many 40+ role models to follow and I think I will be looking forward rather than back.

Thank you for all of the well wishes. Cheers to many more years of fun and adventure, S xoxo

Blowing out the candles! Here’s to many, many, many more years to come =)

A girls weekend away is truly refreshing for both the body and the soul. Especially if the weekend takes place in a beautiful setting, with some of your best girlfriends and is partially in celebration of an upcoming milestone in one’s life. Ahem, yes, my little 40th birthday is getting very, very, VERY close 😉 This past weekend I hopped on a plane and headed to Ottawa. On Thursday, I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to re-connect with some incredible women from my old hood and then on Friday after a brief visit to check on my favorite peeps at GHS, a few of us headed up to the stunning Mt. Tremblant resort village in Quebec. The weekend was filled with giggling, sharing, reminiscing, eating, drinking, dancing, relaxing and more laughing. It made my heart soar. After all if you are going to be stuck in a zombie apocalypse in Quebec, there really is no other group of women I would rather be with! (Yes, every once in awhile there can be inside jokes on the blog) So, here are the pictures I am allowed to share with you, hope you enjoy them. And to my amazing fluffer-lover girlfriends, I look forward to our next adventure together!! xoxox

Life is busy. It just is. End of year picnics, travel, visitors, rehearsals, performances, the wacky science tests, new jobs, changing weather… Tons of whirlwind adventures. So, yes, I do promise (no Krista, really, I will) to get back to writing soon. I miss it! I have some crazy New York stories tucked away to share but for today I will fill the blog with recent pics from various spots in NYC that I recently wandered through. Hope you enjoy and don’t forget to stop and smell the roses 😉

As you know we had a bit of a rough week last week, losing the Bo-man. So, it was perfect timing that we had a last minute trip to Florida planned. All four of us needed a bit of time away and some quality family time to re-group, relax and unwind. We did just that. Under the beautiful sunny skies of Orlando, we swam, read, drank, ate, slept, spun around, flew upside down, laughed and caught up with one another. It was perfect. Here are some of my favorite pics from our weekend away. Hope you are all enjoying the happiness and renewal that comes with Spring, happy, happy Wednesday =)

Yesterday we lost a dear furry family member, the beloved Bogie. He was almost 14 years old and to be honest it will be hard to imagine our family without him, he has been such a cherished part of it for so long. We have been comforted by all the kind words from friends and family. Thank you, it really does mean so much. One thing is for sure, that dog sure did touch a lot of lives 😉 Good-bye Bo-man, you will be missed by many but we know that you are at peace. I am hoping that doggie heaven consists of steak dinners and many games of frisbee and Kong. Here are few pics from throughout the years. We love you Bogie.

One of my great joys right now is the incredible group of women that I have the privilege of running with three days a week. As you know from reading my post on achieving my goal of running my first ever 1/2 marathon, I would not have been able to have done it without them. I feel like our friendships have grown stronger and we have formed a great bond by pounding the pavement mile after mile in Central Park.

So, it truly was an honor to watch my friends achieve their personal 1/2 marathon goal on April 15th in the women’s only MORE race in Central Park. Psychologically this is an extremely hard race as it encompasses two full loops of Central Park. Crossing the start line and continuing on for a second loop is mentally hard especially when you know that you have to face all of those challenging hills one more time. I did not envy them this course. It is a tough one. And on this day the weather was very warm and humid for April. The sun was beating down and this was not the weather we had trained in.

Jessica and I positioned ourselves on Harlem Hill at the point where you think you are almost up the hill but still have the last little gruelling bit to climb. It is an ugly fight to the top. Trust me, I curse at this point every, single, time. Jess and I waited with our noise makers and our sign for our running partners.

Oh ya, we do!!!

It was truly inspiring to watch a women’s only race and to see the determination and commitment as thousands of women conquered the Harlem Hill. But, it really was one of the best feelings when we saw our amazing running partners looking like the incredible and strong women that they are kicking some butt as we screamed and cheered them on, twice. I couldn’t help but get all choked up. We had all come such a long way, together.

After we watched our last friend reach the top of the hill Jessica and I exited the park and hopped in a cab, heading down towards the finish line. We couldn’t wait to see our running crew and congratulate them. What a feeling! What an accomplishment! We all stuck with it, we encouraged each other when we needed it, we laughed and cried and cursed. WE ARE ROCKSTARS!!!

I just want to say a BIG Congratulations to my amazing running friends. You continue to inspire me everyday with your dedication, energy and strength. Seriously, LOVE you all.

And we are still running… I can’t wait to see where our sneakers take us next!!

Congratulations, my amazing running friends!!

One of the things I love the most about living in NYC is getting to see the reactions of people experiencing Manhattan for the first time. It really is an awe- inspiring place with so much to see and do it is impossible to even scratch the surface on a three day trip. My former high school where I taught at, Gloucester High School, arrived last Thursday and did their very best to squeeze in as many activities as possible in three days. I would say that they were incredibly successful! I can only imagine that there were some pretty tired kids and some worn out feet on the bus ride home =) It was wonderful to be able to spend some time with a great group of teens and some cherished friends. There really is nothing better than getting lost in the energy and excitement of the chatter about New York, it reminds me of how truly lucky I am to live in such a special place. Thanks for letting me hang out with you- GHS music gang, you are an awesome group and you also made me remember how fortunate I was to teach at the beyond awesome GHS. Go Gators! (Here are just a few pics from their MANY adventures, I could barely keep up!)

Come back and visit soon!

Today on our run in Central Park, we were on my favorite FLAT stretch on the east side of the park when our group noticed the beautiful flowers in bloom lining our route. Apparently this is a stretch from East 85th to 96th street that has been revitalized by the Central Park Conservancy and named Rhododendron Mile. The flowers have been planted and the full effect of the project in spectacular glory will be seen in Spring 2013. I think even this year, it already adds beautiful color to an already pretty amazing park. So now on those gruelling morning runs I will not only look forward to this stretch for it’s wonderful flatness but also for the added bonus of the incredible breathtaking beauty of nature. Hope you are enjoying your Wednesday, S =)

A little peek at the beauty lining the East side.

One of these days I hope to actually get in some time to write, when things are not quite as crazy- is that even possible?? =) Anyway, happy Wednesday everyone, today I am going to be sharing some pics that I took last week when the girls and I were out enjoying their Spring Break. We decided to take the tram over to Roosevelt Island (remember the tram scenes from the movie Spiderman?!) and do some exploring. For the mere cost of a swipe of your Metro Card you can take a tram ride boarding from the east side at 59th street taking a journey above the East River to Roosevelt Island. My Manhattan girlies found Roosevelt Island to be both calm and a little bit boring while I quite enjoyed the change of pace and idyllic surroundings. We all agreed that the views of Manhattan were spectacular and that the tram ride was super fun! History of Roosevelt Island

Almost home =)

Last Friday the girls and I started off Spring Break by heading to Brooklyn to visit the NY Transit Museum. We had a blast learning about the history of New York City’s mass transportation. We were there bright and early and pretty much had the place to ourselves. We took advantage of this by having our very own photo shoot in the subway cars on display from the different eras- 1900’s and beyond. Here are some of the pics from our adventure. I have also included some shots from DUMBO where we wandered over to have lunch and then walked home across the Brooklyn Bridge to Manhattan. Hope you enjoy. Have a fabulous Wedenesday!
