Last June a few of us in our moms running group had this crazy idea that if we signed up for a half marathon in September it would force us to keep up our running during the hot, humid, stinky and generally disgusting (for running) days of a NYC summer. It sounded really good in theory. In reality it was nearly impossible to co-ordinate everyone’s schedules between camp drop off, vacations, appointments and of course those wonderful, lovable, demanding children 😉

I was getting some miles in and then BAM! Just like that, I became sidelined with my first “crap, I have to stop” running injury- the dreaded plantar fasciitis. For those of you who have ever suffered from this injury you know that it really friggin’ hurts and the worst part is that it takes an incredibly long time to heal. You need to be able to rest your foot. Um, hello, it is very hard to rest your feet when you live in Manhattan!! Okay, enough whining. Basically, all summer I wasn’t able to run and instead I cycled and worked out with my kick ass trainer, the ex-marine. I was very lucky to still be able to do this but, I missed running. Wow, who am I??! Did I really just write that? Yep. I missed the running.

Flash forward to this past weekend. It was now the weekend of the Philadelphia Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon. And my foot was feeling good, finally. I was actually walking pain free for the first time in about two months. Our weekend 1/2 marathon running group had dwindled down to a group of four. Unfortunately others had injuries and illness as well. Jess and I had a non-refundable hotel room and a “let’s go anyway” attitude. However, I was under very strict instructions from my hubby and a few other smarter than me people to not run the entire race. I grumbled and agreed that running the full race would be stupid and I would stop 1/2 way at the Rocky steps. Certain peeps were not convinced that I would wisely stop, apparently sometimes I act stupidly. Huh…I prefer stubborn.

On Saturday morning Jessica and I jumped into her jeep and after an adventurous ride to Philly that included a loooong time to get off the Island (why were all the roads closed??) and then a gas stop in an extremely sketchy area of New Jersey (think Law & Order body dump) we arrived in downtown Philadelphia. This was my first time in Philly. It is a very beautiful city. We met Rachel at the Expo, picked up race kits and perused merchandise. Next stop, after the crazy road trip was beer and dinner. It was an early evening as we would meet at 6:30 the next day to head to the race start.

I absolutely love the energy of the pre-race excitement. Thousands of people gathered, barely awake, waiting in line for the porta-potties, stretching, bouncing, nervous, anxious, chatting, all headed towards one common goal, the finish line.

Jess and I said good-bye to Rachel and Toby. Wishing Rachel an awesome race, the only rockstar who was actually going to run the full 1/2 marathon and headed to our corral. It was an absolutely perfect morning for a run- not too hot, bright skies, no humidity. The course is very flat and the first part takes you right through the heart of the city. Jessica was true to her word (and an excellent wingman) as was I, doubters 🙂 and we stopped the race right at the Rocky statue. It was hard to stop but it was the right thing to do, the little twinge in my left foot reminding me that I am not yet 100%. There will always be other races.

Jess and I spent the rest of the day relaxing, seeing some sites and enjoying some good food and drink. A perfect little escape.

In the end it was a beautiful morning for a run in a different city with hundreds of other people pounding the pavement too. And coach Rachel, congrats to you, our faithful coach who always brings her amazingness to each and every run. You are an inspiration. Congrats on your FULL half!

As for me, back to playing with my balls (MELT method), icing, stretching and best of all running with the moms I adore. Here’s to our next running adventure when we are all well trained, healthy and happy!!!

I have logged many, many miles running in Central Park but it was only recently that I actually noticed the beautiful Obelisk (nicknamed Cleopatra’s Needle) that sits in grandeur behind the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Ask my friend Rachel, apparently I wasn’t very observant, although I blame all the focus on trying not to pass out while running ;)!! There is a fascinating story about this beautiful Obelisk, that you can read about here. Essentially it is the oldest man made object in the park and was indeed a gift from Egypt. Today as we were running through the park a woman was painting the Obelisk and I was compelled to stop and take a pic. She was incredibly talented and I was struck by the beauty of the morning, the Obelisk itself and her stunning representation. I hope you enjoy! Happy Wednesday everyone!!

Embracing The Day

It has been one of those Mondays… non stop craziness and a million and one things to do… Yet I found myself gazing out the window of my office numerous times as I pounded away at the keyboard. It is an absolutely spectacular day here in NYC. No humidity, cooler temperatures, blue skies with clouds floating by, a slight chill and promise of fall in the air. The perfect September day. I was itching to get out and embrace the day.

Daydreaming!!

So, after I crossed off a few of the things to do on my never ending list, I decided that today was too perfect to resist and I leashed up my faithful canine friend and headed out on one of our favorite walks down by the water along Riverside Park. We shared the path with a few cyclists, runners, other wandering souls and dog walkers.

My handsome dog pal, Dopey =)

It was a truly beautiful walk and the air was crisp and fresh. The trees are already turning a bit and losing their leaves, the boats are anchored in the harbor and being NYC, there was even a large yacht making its way toward larger water.

Love the beauty of the Hudson River

Puffy white clouds dotting the skyline

Why yes, that rather large beautiful boat is towing a much smaller one behind…

As I walked, enjoying the calm and the beauty of the day my thoughts began to drift to the significance of tomorrow’s date, September 11th. Eleven years ago, it was a beautiful day just like this one. I did not want to dwell on the past, but I couldn’t help but think how important it is to embrace the here and now. And so I am glad that I took a bit of a pause in my day to just enjoy the moment, to reflect and in some ways to remember. It is so very easy to get caught up in the chaos, but today I took the time to breathe. NYC, I adore you.

Take a seat and rest for a moment. I will even share the bench xox

You would never know it by the crushing heat and humidity in Manhattan today, but yes it is September and there are signs of Fall approaching all around the city. First of all, the people are back. The streets are crowded with residents not tourists and everyone is on a mission- shopping, school supplies, mani/pedi’s, back to work, back to the gym, back to school. There is a buzz and the streets are hopping! Look out if you are still in summer mode, you might just get run over- literally 😉 Time to get your head out of the clouds, your brain back from the beach and get organized (at least that is the pep talk I am giving myself!). So here are a few pics I took when I was out and about today that definitely signal to me that the seasons are changing. Now, if Mother Nature would catch up and chase away the heat, I would happily pull out the jeans and sweaters!!! Happy Wednesday and I wish everyone a fun and fabulous transition into all the changes that Fall brings with it.

All of the yummy Fall classics are back at Starbucks… can you say Pumpkin Scone??

Ugh, taking the kids for flu shots, think I will leave that to hubby 😉

These signs seem to disappear in the summer, or maybe I just don’t notice them.

The leaves are falling already!

The ads for new shows are everywhere!

Bye summer, we will miss you so!

We arrived back in NYC late yesterday afternoon. And while it is oh so good to be home, after a doctor’s appointment involving needles to the heel (damn Plantar Faciatis!), laundry and more laundry, cranky sleep deprived children and a PA meeting to look forward to this afternoon, I am really wishing I was still on the beach in sunny California. But, like all good things, vacation does need to come to an end! =) We had an amazing time in California and am looking forward to sharing our adventures and pictures with you soon in an upcoming blog but for today I thought I would share some pics of a miniature NYC done in Lego from Legoland California. The whole family got a kick out of seeing our hometown set out in perfect little Lego detail, it really is an incredible thing to see. Hope you enjoy the pics. Happy Wednesday y’all!! Side note: Can’t help the “y’all” because I watched episode after episode of “The Closer” on the plane- such a good show!!!

Ahhh, summer vacation with the family. We are having a blast exploring beautiful San Diego. San Diego, land of perfect weather- sunny, warm and no humidity. We have been packing tons of adventures in before we leave today for a day in Disney and then we head to the coastal town of Carlsbad for more fun activities in the sun. We are enjoying some much needed, rest, relaxation and family time. Here are some pics! Hope you like them 🙂 Happy Wednesday!!

The other day I was walking on the Upper East Side when I stopped to peer in and look at one of the teeniest of tiniest apartments I had ever seen in NYC. Now, I know that real estate and space is at a premium in this city but this a wee bit ridiculous! One of the men renovating the space asked if I was interested in buying it or renting it and I had to laugh, even though it is teeny weeny, a miniscule space like this on the Upper East Side was probably still way above my price range. Gotta love NYC real estate!! On the bright side, I am sure that it was way cheaper than the most expensive property in the city right now, an apartment overlooking Central Park that is on the market for a mere $95, 000, 000.00 Any one want to lend me some cash??!!  Have a fabulous Wednesday and always keep your sense of humor 😉

Yep, there is a building tucked in there!

Sometimes in NYC, it takes a little bit longer to master an outdoor sporting skill than in the ‘burbs. Although, if there was an Olympic sport consisting of fast walking while dodging cabs and tourists AND holding on to an umbrella and coffee, we would win every time 😉 One of those things that take a bit more effort to do is learning to ride a bike without training wheels. It is pretty hard to find a cul-de-sac with no traffic to run up and down beside a kid on a wobbly bike 😉 Luckily we live very close to Riverside Park which offers beautiful straight pathways and lots of wide open spaces to practice. Our youngest recently mastered the no training wheels skill and is happily cruising around on two wheels. Yesterday it was the perfect summer day for getting out and going for a ride. ‘R’ is still a little wobbly but is gaining confidence as she covers more and more pavement. It won’t be long until all of us are zipping around Manhattan on family biking tours. Woohoo!!! Here are some pics from the adventure. Enjoy and have a fabulous Wednesday!

LOVE this!

Tomorrow Ron and I will be going to pick up the girls from camp. They have been gone for two weeks. For two weeks while at sleepaway camp we have not spoken to them at all. I have received 1 letter from each child, where, thankfully, they both said that they were having an AMAZING time. I have even become one of those moms who checks out the camp website and Facebook page hoping to get a glimpse of my children in a photo. It has been both a strange and wonderful experience. I have to admit that I have really missed them, the apartment has been quite lonely without them and even Dopey has been wandering around wondering where they are. I am bursting with excitement to see them. I can’t wait to hear all about their stories and adventures. I am sure they will have grown up immensely in two weeks. I can almost physically feel that first hug!

Now, that being said, that doesn’t mean that I have not enjoyed the two weeks of freedom in NYC without children. Fun has definitely been had 😉 The BIG thing is just being able to spontaneously go out and not have to worry about childcare. This, truly is a vacation in itself. Ron and I have gone for walks, enjoyed dinners out and even went to a movie that WE wanted to see on a Sunday afternoon, I know, crazy, right?? (BTW, “The Dark Knight Rises” is a seriously awesome movie!)

At the Yankees/Sox Game

It has been wonderful not having to worry about scheduling, making lunches and what we are having for dinner. Our fridge has been empty. The only items in it, are beer and milk for cereal. In many ways I think we have reverted back to our University days!! I have enjoyed the simple pleasures of “me” time- heading out for a run and to the gym on my schedule, having a clean apartment that stays clean and being able to leave the Olympics on t.v. all day without a little person asking to change it to one of their shows.

Ron has been able to work late mostly guilt free 😉 and I have been catching up on my guilty pleasure of “The Vampire Diaries”. I even escaped the heat one day by indulging in the wonderful pleasure of an afternoon movie. Unfortunately the only thing playing was “Step Up Revolution”. No judging, if you can get past the non-existent acting the dancing was incredible, no really, it was!!

We really have had a wonderful time as a couple and hanging out doing “adult” type things but I am ready for my little monkeys to come home. I miss the chaos, laughter, love and hugs. I even miss the arguing and nagging… sort of 😉 Most of all I miss the joy that they add to our daily lives and the sparkle that dances around them. So, off to camp we go. Hopefully we can get some pictures this time!! Hope summer is treating you well, S xo

My crazy girls dancing in the streets!

On Monday a few of my girlfriends and I made a quick road trip out of the city to our friend’s house in Sherman, CT. It was a fabulous day filled with the warmth of good friends, much needed laughter, relaxation and of course a little bit of wine and food =) We had fun cruising around Lake Candlewood, cooling off in the water and enjoying the beautiful countryside on the stunning grounds of The White Silo Farm & Winery. It was a fabulous escape from the city and a spectacular day with cherished friends. A big thank you to Rena, for her incredible hospitality xox. Here are the pics from the day, hope you enjoy them. Happy Olympic Wednesday my friends 😉
