Today I had the fantastic experience of spending the morning with R’s second grade class. We went on a field trip to Central Park where with the help of a Park Ranger, we learned all about rock formations. It is at times like this when I feel very fortunate that we have such an amazing greenspace to explore within the city. We may not have a backyard but we certainly do have an oasis of beauty to escape to whenever we would like. The kids loved being outside and I was thrilled to be along for the adventure! Here are some pics, Central Park is truly spectacular at this time of year. Enjoy and have a great day!

My aching head!!

On Saturday morning I woke up ready to go and hang out with the family when BOOM! right around the time we were supposed to leave I started to lose my vision. Little blurry, fuzzy squiggles were dancing in front of my eyes and I knew that this was the first sign of a full blown migraine. The crushing pain would soon follow. Needless to say the family left without me and I took some kick ass meds and crawled back into bed praying for absolute darkness and silence.

Except that I live in NYC and there is no such thing as absolute darkness or silence. Big time bummer when you are suffering from a migraine. For those of you who are fortunate enough to have never experienced a migraine, I will give you a bit of a description of how it feels. Basically, you have insane thoughts about cutting off your head because the pain is so intense that it feels like the there are daggers stuck in your head (not that I have ever had daggers stuck in my head, but I am sure migraine equals same pain), if you are really lucky you are nauseous as well, oh and you have an extreme sensitivity to light and sound. Fun times. So basically all you want to do is crawl into the darkest cave you can find (provided there is not a snoring bear in it) and wait until it is over.

On Saturday I settled for my room. Where it was not even remotely dark enough so I hid under the covers. And then I waited for sleep. But while I was waiting, all of the surrounding sounds of NYC that I normally seem to tune out seemed to be magnified by a thousand. I swear I could hear the jackhammer 10 blocks away, as well as the rumble of the subway, dogs barking, people yelling, cars idling, deliveries being dropped, babies crying, skateboarders bombing down Broadway and then there were the sirens, the piercing, blasting sirens. How many friggin’ fire trucks do we have in this city???!!!!

Finally I slept.

When I got up a few hours later I remembered that I had booked a bike for my friend Julie’s class at Soul Cycle. I decided that I was feeling a lot better and that going to Soul Cycle might just help. Ron thought that it would either be epically bad or good, I guess I would know once I got on the bike.

Even though my head was feeling tons better I was still in that post- migraine, still medicated haze. My body seemed to be good to go but my mind was about two steps behind. This was a very odd feeling and as I stepped out (with my dark sunglasses on) into the late afternoon Saturday hustle and bustle of the Manhattan streets, I felt a little disconnected to what was going on around me. All I could think about was “wow, everyone is moving really fast”.

Luckily I met up with my friend Meilan who escorted me to spin where I only managed to make a small fool of myself NOT on the bike but when I didn’t immediately recognize a certain famous Canadian (who just happens to be a brother of another friend) and stumbled and bumbled my way through a conversation… Ugh. Not necessarily my most eloquent moment. And if you want THAT story you will have to buy me a drink first!!

I guess the moral of my migraine story folks is this,-there really is no safe place to be stuck with a migraine but I am really hoping that if it happens to you, that you are as far away from mid-town as possible 😉 Have a good week!

PS. The Soul Cycle was good for both the head and body- definitely got the blood moving, thanks Julie D =)

Can someone please turn off the lights?! Thanks =)

I love to read, it is one of my favorite all time activities. So, I am always on the lookout for a new book, something I can really delve into and escape for awhile. That is why I am soo excited that my friend Tim O’Mara’s new book “Sacrifice Fly” has just been released. It has been sitting pre-ordered on my Nook, taunting me… until yesterday when I was finally able to download it. YAY!! Now that the days are shorter and the nights are a bit cooler and seem a bit darker I am going to curl up on the couch with a cup of tea and get lost in this highly recommended new mystery (one of my fave genres)  that takes place in NYC. I suggest you do the same! Congratulations Tim!!!! Happy Wednesday everyone 😉

Love the book artwork

“Tim O’Mara’s Sacrifice Fly is the best first crime novel I’ve read in years. Knowing about the ways of city life and compassionate about its flawed characters, the writing has a swing as natural and strong as Roberto Clemente’s. It’s a real gem.”
—Peter Blauner, author of Slow Motion Riot and Slipping into Darkness

Will definitely be stopping by on Thursday at B&N on the UWS

“Tim O’Mara’s Sacrifice Fly is superb—one of those rare first novels that delivers on every level. Raymond Donne is an unforgettable character, and O’Mara will make you feel the steam coming off the Brooklyn streets where Donne works, lives, and tries to stay alive long enough to do the right thing. I can’t wait to read O’Mara’s next book—this newcomer is one to watch.”
—Jan Burke, bestselling author of Disturbance

And finally, here it is!! I am getting my cup of tea ready right now 😉

Right now in our household we are beginning the process of figuring out the whole middle school application procedure for our oldest who will be entering 6th grade next year. In NYC this whole business is just as stressful as applying for a job or figuring out what University/College to attend. It involves tours, test scores, portfolios, interviews, school tests and auditions. And yes, this is for public school. So, we are approaching this with as much of a level head as possible, trying to keep our sense of humor and our perspective. After all, these kids are only 10! I will write in more detail about the whole shebang later on. But right now, I am off to do more research! Oh NYC…  Happy Wednesday. Keep calm and have some wine 😉

I have walked by the One Million Acts of Kindness bus (see pics below) a few times in the past couple of days and to be honest I haven’t ventured over to their website but I am sure I will. Instead, what it got me to think about was the simple act of just being nice. Thinking before you act and trying to be positive. In NYC, it is possible to come in contact with dozens, sometimes even hundreds of people a day. That kind of human interaction can be exhausting at the best of times. When I looked at the bus and read the inspirational quotes written on it, it inspired me to just be a little bit nicer as I went about my day. It really doesn’t take a lot of effort. With all of the crazy going on in the world today, just being nice to the people around us might go a long way to enjoying a happier state of being. At the very least, it just might make someone’s day 😉 On that note, have a fabulous day and be well. Happy Wednesday, S xo

Last June a few of us in our moms running group had this crazy idea that if we signed up for a half marathon in September it would force us to keep up our running during the hot, humid, stinky and generally disgusting (for running) days of a NYC summer. It sounded really good in theory. In reality it was nearly impossible to co-ordinate everyone’s schedules between camp drop off, vacations, appointments and of course those wonderful, lovable, demanding children 😉

I was getting some miles in and then BAM! Just like that, I became sidelined with my first “crap, I have to stop” running injury- the dreaded plantar fasciitis. For those of you who have ever suffered from this injury you know that it really friggin’ hurts and the worst part is that it takes an incredibly long time to heal. You need to be able to rest your foot. Um, hello, it is very hard to rest your feet when you live in Manhattan!! Okay, enough whining. Basically, all summer I wasn’t able to run and instead I cycled and worked out with my kick ass trainer, the ex-marine. I was very lucky to still be able to do this but, I missed running. Wow, who am I??! Did I really just write that? Yep. I missed the running.

Flash forward to this past weekend. It was now the weekend of the Philadelphia Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon. And my foot was feeling good, finally. I was actually walking pain free for the first time in about two months. Our weekend 1/2 marathon running group had dwindled down to a group of four. Unfortunately others had injuries and illness as well. Jess and I had a non-refundable hotel room and a “let’s go anyway” attitude. However, I was under very strict instructions from my hubby and a few other smarter than me people to not run the entire race. I grumbled and agreed that running the full race would be stupid and I would stop 1/2 way at the Rocky steps. Certain peeps were not convinced that I would wisely stop, apparently sometimes I act stupidly. Huh…I prefer stubborn.

On Saturday morning Jessica and I jumped into her jeep and after an adventurous ride to Philly that included a loooong time to get off the Island (why were all the roads closed??) and then a gas stop in an extremely sketchy area of New Jersey (think Law & Order body dump) we arrived in downtown Philadelphia. This was my first time in Philly. It is a very beautiful city. We met Rachel at the Expo, picked up race kits and perused merchandise. Next stop, after the crazy road trip was beer and dinner. It was an early evening as we would meet at 6:30 the next day to head to the race start.

I absolutely love the energy of the pre-race excitement. Thousands of people gathered, barely awake, waiting in line for the porta-potties, stretching, bouncing, nervous, anxious, chatting, all headed towards one common goal, the finish line.

Jess and I said good-bye to Rachel and Toby. Wishing Rachel an awesome race, the only rockstar who was actually going to run the full 1/2 marathon and headed to our corral. It was an absolutely perfect morning for a run- not too hot, bright skies, no humidity. The course is very flat and the first part takes you right through the heart of the city. Jessica was true to her word (and an excellent wingman) as was I, doubters 🙂 and we stopped the race right at the Rocky statue. It was hard to stop but it was the right thing to do, the little twinge in my left foot reminding me that I am not yet 100%. There will always be other races.

Jess and I spent the rest of the day relaxing, seeing some sites and enjoying some good food and drink. A perfect little escape.

In the end it was a beautiful morning for a run in a different city with hundreds of other people pounding the pavement too. And coach Rachel, congrats to you, our faithful coach who always brings her amazingness to each and every run. You are an inspiration. Congrats on your FULL half!

As for me, back to playing with my balls (MELT method), icing, stretching and best of all running with the moms I adore. Here’s to our next running adventure when we are all well trained, healthy and happy!!!

I have logged many, many miles running in Central Park but it was only recently that I actually noticed the beautiful Obelisk (nicknamed Cleopatra’s Needle) that sits in grandeur behind the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Ask my friend Rachel, apparently I wasn’t very observant, although I blame all the focus on trying not to pass out while running ;)!! There is a fascinating story about this beautiful Obelisk, that you can read about here. Essentially it is the oldest man made object in the park and was indeed a gift from Egypt. Today as we were running through the park a woman was painting the Obelisk and I was compelled to stop and take a pic. She was incredibly talented and I was struck by the beauty of the morning, the Obelisk itself and her stunning representation. I hope you enjoy! Happy Wednesday everyone!!

It has been one of those Mondays… non stop craziness and a million and one things to do… Yet I found myself gazing out the window of my office numerous times as I pounded away at the keyboard. It is an absolutely spectacular day here in NYC. No humidity, cooler temperatures, blue skies with clouds floating by, a slight chill and promise of fall in the air. The perfect September day. I was itching to get out and embrace the day.

Daydreaming!!

So, after I crossed off a few of the things to do on my never ending list, I decided that today was too perfect to resist and I leashed up my faithful canine friend and headed out on one of our favorite walks down by the water along Riverside Park. We shared the path with a few cyclists, runners, other wandering souls and dog walkers.

My handsome dog pal, Dopey =)

It was a truly beautiful walk and the air was crisp and fresh. The trees are already turning a bit and losing their leaves, the boats are anchored in the harbor and being NYC, there was even a large yacht making its way toward larger water.

Love the beauty of the Hudson River

Puffy white clouds dotting the skyline

Why yes, that rather large beautiful boat is towing a much smaller one behind…

As I walked, enjoying the calm and the beauty of the day my thoughts began to drift to the significance of tomorrow’s date, September 11th. Eleven years ago, it was a beautiful day just like this one. I did not want to dwell on the past, but I couldn’t help but think how important it is to embrace the here and now. And so I am glad that I took a bit of a pause in my day to just enjoy the moment, to reflect and in some ways to remember. It is so very easy to get caught up in the chaos, but today I took the time to breathe. NYC, I adore you.

Take a seat and rest for a moment. I will even share the bench xox

We arrived back in NYC late yesterday afternoon. And while it is oh so good to be home, after a doctor’s appointment involving needles to the heel (damn Plantar Faciatis!), laundry and more laundry, cranky sleep deprived children and a PA meeting to look forward to this afternoon, I am really wishing I was still on the beach in sunny California. But, like all good things, vacation does need to come to an end! =) We had an amazing time in California and am looking forward to sharing our adventures and pictures with you soon in an upcoming blog but for today I thought I would share some pics of a miniature NYC done in Lego from Legoland California. The whole family got a kick out of seeing our hometown set out in perfect little Lego detail, it really is an incredible thing to see. Hope you enjoy the pics. Happy Wednesday y’all!! Side note: Can’t help the “y’all” because I watched episode after episode of “The Closer” on the plane- such a good show!!!

The other day I was walking on the Upper East Side when I stopped to peer in and look at one of the teeniest of tiniest apartments I had ever seen in NYC. Now, I know that real estate and space is at a premium in this city but this a wee bit ridiculous! One of the men renovating the space asked if I was interested in buying it or renting it and I had to laugh, even though it is teeny weeny, a miniscule space like this on the Upper East Side was probably still way above my price range. Gotta love NYC real estate!! On the bright side, I am sure that it was way cheaper than the most expensive property in the city right now, an apartment overlooking Central Park that is on the market for a mere $95, 000, 000.00 Any one want to lend me some cash??!!  Have a fabulous Wednesday and always keep your sense of humor 😉

Yep, there is a building tucked in there!
